Brass wool, you say? I know people say no matter how fine, steel wool will scratch the chrome - but brass won't? How fine? I'm using my fingernail and Goo Gone and it's a slow process

Did you by chance check the alternator belt, many times people bring in a vehicle that they hear a thump as you described and then the lights and such, many times it is just the belt flipped off and thumped on it's way out. Just something I have witnessed/fixed as a mechanic a few times.

Then again, forum members have been suggesting for some time now that the vintage market has tanked. Guess I won't know for sure until I sell a bike, but for this? I would pay what I had to pay for my grail

I was happy to find out that the frame was uppermost in Bianchi's food chain in '81. I was even happier to discover there was no difference between the frame/fork of the SC and SL - just the components. Once I was able to satisfy myself that the deets in Mick's pics matched the stuff I found in the catalogs, it was only a matter of determining if any issues were over the top in person. They weren't. And you're right, they don't appear too often; when they do, I always give them a good look. This will invite the same. I will do my infil-painting with a matching dark blue (flutes, lettering on gear levers), but I'm not going to worry about finding panto stuff. I've already got a full-panto bike.

DD
Tx, unfortunately the pic is from 7 yrs ago and it has suffered quite a bit in that time. It is an 81 also with the gold date label at the bottom of the ST. The big deal for me was the big size, I think its even harder to find something like this in big size if you really want one so when I do find one, I usually get after it.

It has SR f+r derailleurs I believe to be original, original panto stem and seatpost, a panto repro outer ring to go with a Record crank I already have and some original spec Merckx 3ttt bars, SR headset to replace the alloy Ofmega and some SL pedals in black. Wheels are another story, I could have lived with the ones in the pic but the front was replaced with an ancient Fiamme and Record hub so I will swap in a decent wheel set short term and build up a set of NOS gold fir rims I lucked out on.

These are about as cool as it gets imho, like it or not, and I do.

Jeff, that’s a fantastic looking bike! The seller was right to stick to his guns on the price. I’ve never tried brass wool on chrome but have had good luck with aluminum foil and a few drops of water. Some people say lemon juice helps with this. If you’re keeping the cranks on and the BB is smooth, I’d leave it for now although I also like to take a new to me bike completely apart. You never know, you might find a Benjamin hidden in there!

If it gets to the point you’re going to mangle the Bb, let me know and I can mail you the Phil tool.

I had good results using a paste made of Barkeepers Friend. I think it comes as a "soft cleanser" now. Put it on, work it with a cloth, Rinse using a wet cloth and dry.

The milling and drilling of high end Modolo brakes works for me too, DD.
No, they are nothing like speedy(s) if anyone is wondering.

Corollary to the n+1 rule: (price paid)/Grail = 1

Enjoy!

Looks like a great project and DD will send it to the top level.

It will be a fun thread for all of us on the sidelines.

I never was a big Bianchi aficionado, but the ones I've owned were very, very nice bikes.

FWIW I have used the Modolos racing back in the day and they were solid performers. Also, they were always priced well.

Thank you for this info, too - it would be awesome if this thread ends up providing the answer to "dude, what happened to my car?"

I'll make sure they know the order of events; maybe they'll recognize the symptoms in the same way others here have.

One thing I've thought is weird here is that there is no gold date label and no evidence of there ever being one. Did they all come with this feature? Also, most of the pics I'm finding online have date stamping on the seat lug, but mine has nothing but the serial on the bottom of the shell.

I'm going to put the number on the Bianchi serial number thread.

Ooh, for me the aluminum foil trick isn't one I can try; I know, it sounds funny, but for me, working in any way with aluminum foil is for others like nails on a chalkboard. Don't know why, but my phobia/whatever it is totally negates this option for me

I was talking to a friend about taking it down to the frame last night. We were talking about mechanical issues causing accidents and my stance was that I didn't have a clue about how the bike was maintained over the intervening years, so I wouldn't trust it until I'd had my hands in its guts. I found a Phil tool for the BB last night off Ebay, so I'll have that early next week - but thanks for the offer! I'll take it down to frame/fork but leave the headset in.

It'll be pretty much box-stock, with some little flourishes, but I think it will look fantastic because it's an old Bianchi

A nice Bianchi has always been in the back of my mind. In the back mainly because ones in super shape in my size have been thin on the ground and expensive (because they all seemed to sport full-panto setups which I don't need). This will be just right in stock Campy SR and NR.

Although I'd like to try the brakes, I do have a local friend who has been looking for a pair for a project, so I'll help by passing these along. I guess I'm also used to the Campy feel and too curmudgeonly to change!

I've only owned Cross Concepts and two versions of the Axis.

Both were stiff as a board. Scandium was great for racing, but not much in the "comfy" department.

Yours is the only way to go!!!!

As for the brakes, vintage Campy is almost always a good choice. imho

This will be my first and only - probably my last bike, too. It's so cool (to me), what could top it? I'd need to find another grail

I think the ride will be familiar, being Columbus SL, but I'm interested in finding out how different/same it feels on the road. As for the brakes, I'll stick with what I know, both regarding feel and wrenching familiarity. I have a feeling this will be getting a lot of miles the rest of the summer as soon as I get this post out and finish the build.

That's a beauty, DD. I haven't had the itch for a C&V bike in a while, but seeing that up for grabs in the right size would certainly do it... Mrs_Name always talks about how pretty celeste is, so that's the in. Looking forward to more.

Curious to hear about handling/attitude differences from the Colnago.

Enjoy.

1. A belated Happy Birthday to you Senior Chief, many more to come also.

2. Very nice bike, even if it is Celeste/Green, (Robbie is just out of sorts that it isn't USMC fatigue green.)

3. Hope the Panzerkampfwagen isn't too bad off, that's money the could be spent on a bicycle.

Bill

Thanks, Bill!

The more I hear from car-savvy posters, the more I think this might be a fairly simple (and hopefully cheap, too) fix. Fingers crossed, otherwise, I suppose I have to figure car repairs into the price of the new bike. Ouch!

Thank you! Still waiting on getting the post out, but the process has begun. Most of the rest of the bike has been cleaned up, now it's time for new cables and a bit more work on getting rid of some surface blems that should come out with Scratch-X and of course tidying up the rust speckling. Shoot, if the post wasn't stuck I could prolly test ride it tomorrow. Oh, well. Soon, I hope, and I'll be sure to check back in with final-product photos and a ride report.

I agree wholeheartedly - the 70s and the early 80s were the best time for Bicycling as far as this guy is concerned. I especially loved those Lickton's Cycle City ads with all the parts represented by nicely-done drawings. Seeing the prices today makes me wince!

Sweet! Welcome to the club. If you can't find a model name it was probably (as you and others have metioned) sold as a Specialissima framset, especially since it appears built up of racer-preferred parts.

FWIW, the Super Corsa and SL are two-word model names. (The later SL might be one word, I'm not sure.) Might help when researching.

Check Mark Bulgier's site for catalog.bulgier.net - /pics/bike/Catalogs/ (Marked 81 but I think it's 1980.) I have the sales price sheet somewhere for the Super Corsa and it was something like $2700! (Edit: found it - - list price was $2400)
