Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Michelin Pro 4 tire life sucks

This is the first "expensive" tires I've splurged on and after about 1000 miles the rear has a spot that is worn through already. I got two flats in a month and thought it was a fluke but nope tire is shredded. My Conti Ultra Sports for $20 lasted about 2500 miles

Yeah I get your pain man same her they don't last very long, but than again they are racing tyres not meant to endure. there other types of tyres that are meant to last longer like Michelin's pro 4 endurance true. they last a bit longer maybe 2500 to 3000 miles not much longer. They supposed to be more puncture tlresistant and wear slower but I think the suppleness is the loss on having a slower wearing tyre

I use both Pro4 SC, and Pro4 Endurance exclusively. The SC is more susceptible to cuts and punctures, but both last about 2500 miles.

This isn't even an issue with cuts/punctures its just about a 1.5" patch that's worn through

sounds like you need to stop skidding to a stop.

I've had two panic stops on them. Guess that's all it takes

Use your front brake in a panic stop and you won't wear out your rears.

I've had that happen to many racing tires. It sucks, but at least you didn't slam into a car/pedestrian/dog because you couldn't stop in time.

I expect them to be easier to mount from what I've read and I'm going 700x25 to go with my wide profile rims. But not expecting longer life. I don't want to pay that 40g per tire weight penalty for longevity. I worked hard to get this bike to 15 lbs haha

Pretty sure I slammed both each time. If only I was calm enough to think about that at the moment.

And here I just went and bought a pair of pro4 endurance tires, my most expensive tires to date at ~$66 shipped to Japan with free tubes. Hopefully mine get 2500 miles.

The Pro4 E gives you both good performance, and durability.

how exactly is the Pro4 Endurance different than the (discontinued) Krylion?

honest question, as the Krylion's can be had for dirt cheap atm.

the krylions were my favorite before they were discontinued. good bang for the buck. hadda go with the michelin pro 4 endurance
and pro 3 race in lieu of since i've had difficulty finding the krylions (and now wondering about the ones i do locate as to
how they've been stored, how long will a unused new tire keep before quality/performance deteriorates...).
krylions i was getting about 3K miles of usage per tire, pro 4's about the same. pro 3's seem to be giving me about 2k and
i've had several in the last 2 years either develop strange weakness spots or have part of the inner wire weave poke thru
waay before the life expectancy of said tire. the pro 3's are generally about $10 less per tire (and have always been in stock)
than the pro 4's but the savings aren't worth it to me. the krylions and pro 4's also seemed to handle the occasional dirt/gravel
road much better wearwise. going back to the pro 4's for my main bike but if i come across some
krylions in 700x23 at that discounted price, i'll likely pick up a pair for a back up bike. to me, the pro 4's have always seemed a little nimbler
and more responsive than either the krylions and pro 3's. the pro 4's have the best performance/durability record i've encountered but i've
only ridden michelins, contis and vittorias.

I don't understand how general tire wear is localized to a 1.5" area.

I burned through to the threads on my first Pro4 Service Course rear tire in 1400 miles. Got about 700 miles on it's replacement (Pro4 Endurance v2) so far, and it looks to be holding up OK. We'll see if it lasts longer.

That said, I only spent $30 on the tire SC tire, so I wasn't shedding too many tears.

I get about 1600 miles on a rear Pro4 SC before I start seeing the cords. I weight about 175 lb and run 90 psi in the rear.

I read somewhere that they've very recently reformulated the tire to significantly reduce rolling resistance. IDK how this might affect life.

Same here, for the most part, except for the occasional free/cheapo tire that I put on my beater bike.

Also, nice location . I'm in Linda Vista - Mesa College area.

Are the roads in your are pretty rough?

I weigh the same as you(use higher inflation), but get about 2400 miles before they become very susceptible to punctures.

This is why I live at the opposite end of the spectrum. Durability and longevity are paramount. The Gator Hardshell mounted on my rear wheel just passed 4,300 miles, and just wore past the wear indicators. I'm going Kramer on this one and seeing how long it goes until it dies or threads start poking out.

The OP's experience with the PRO4 sounds all too much like my experience with Schwalbe One-- I got 1,000 miles out of the first one, and 900 miles out of the replacement.

to be fair, the OP skidded through them in a few panic stops, not normal mileage wear.

Yeah, mine had no such panic stops. I do ride on awful roads, and I'm not a lightweight, so I'm sure both contributed. The Schwalbe One on the front wheel still had some life in it when the 2nd rear tire wore out, so load on the wheel may well have been the #1 wear factor.
