I really like AWS, most of my clients haven't yet made the jump over to the cloud though. I haven't even been able to get them to use git :-|

It came up because we started providing a bunch of instructional videos, and we managed to host all mega gazillion GB of them with some random provider with unlimited downloads for something like $9/month, which makes AWS look usurious.
Of course, the difference is that we don't care that much if the free videos are unavailable for some period of time due to their server facility melting or whatever, but our main hosting can't be failing...

Just because people don't actually use the word cockamamie anymore doesn't mean that things aren't just as cockamamie as they ever were.

I got a great one recently. Made to look like a check, with just a little extra stuff to fill out in the endorsement block. "only" 31% apr, but they also hit you with a 33% of total borrowing fee.
I'm guessing they don't need many people to take the bait to be worth the postage at that return rate.

I'm on the third iteration of a project. First round: sales: we need something like this product we used to make, but with a different ui. Engineering: ok, here are our questions about the product spec, and the things we need to nail down. Sales: don't worry about that, they'll take whatever, just do it fast. Engineering: reluctantly does something like. Sales: they don't like it and project is dead.
Second round: repeat first round.
Third round: repeat first two rounds up to "don't worry about it, they'll take whatever", except it's only an emergency in a huge rush when we need to do something, not the customer.
What could possibly go wrong with this project?

Nope. A salesperson with not enough to do perhaps, and a dogged determination to do this the slowest and most expensive way possible. I'm pretty sure the profit numbers on this are inflated 25+% too, but it's an objectively small enough project that it's not worth crushing somebody's pet project. That would actually be more work than just doing it and saying told you so. I wish somebody else had the damn project though.

My back isn't getting better. It was mostly ok, but then carrying and picking up the baby isn't doing it any favors. I'm starting to get some numbness in one toe on my left foot, I think something is pinched now. I went to a chiropractor a lot when I was younger, I might try that again, because I have so much free time on my hands, ya know.

Fire at work this morning in one of the fume hoods. Nobody injured, thankfully, but we did have to evacuate all 8 lab and office suites in our building until the fire dept. cleared us to return. Pretty crazy, I've been here for nearly 5 yrs and never witnessed anything like it.

Finally divided Al and Fe zero-valent powders for a pyrophoric application. We reduce them in a furnace with hydrogen gas (yikes!) and handle them in glove boxes. One of the cartridges was opened that was thought to have oxidized already, guess not.
