If you’re still in DC, take a spin past the Jefferson Memorial over to Hanes Point. Nice paved loop with no traffic and nice views.

Another short ride for me yesterday. Rode up a stiff climb in a newish McMansion development just outside town. Temps have been a little cooler but I think my body has soaked up all the humidity it can stand. This is looking back to the west side of Charlottesville with the white splotch to the right UVA Hospital and the UVA football stadium to the left. I live just past there.
Oregonians and Northern Californians, I hope you folks are doing OK and doesn’t get any worse than some smoky air.

I'll take some humidity, please! Things are seeming better in the valley in Oregon now. We've had >100,000 acre fires east of the state's major cities this past week; some of which have merged to create huge fire perimeters. They exploded to that size, mostly overnight Monday, due to high winds with really low humidity coming from the east of the state. Where I'm at there's not much other than poor air and I'm not near any evacuation zones. There have been a few small fires to pop up near me, which were (thankfully) promptly contained by local fire departments. The air quality has been ranging from very-unhealthy to hazardous all week, so I've been staying inside. I'm just outside of a small city and I have a handy visibility indicator called Bald Hill. It's about 1 mile away, as the crow flies, and today I can only barely make out its slope and outline through the smoke.

Seems like things are on the downward slope though. The dry winds have subsided and we're due for more moist air off the ocean. Hopefully that will allow the fire crews to get some control on these fires. So far they have had no way to contain them and were focused on protecting structures and making sure people could evacuate. Several small communities in the area the fires are burning have been absolutely devastated. The governor stated that this will likely be the most destructive fire season in the history of the state, in terms of property and lives.

So, I'm pretty thankful I'm not in the path of anything for now. It's all on the other side of the valley from me. Could have been a different story; and was a different story for thousands of folks in those areas.

Really looking forward to my next ride, when I can see the sky again.

Riding the Raleigh again in Gloucester County NJ. One shot is the Old Stone Church (1793) in Woolwich Township.
The second shot is nearby Hendrickson Millpond, which factored into the Underground Railroad as a place where escaped slaves who had come North from Delaware and Maryland could sometimes find paid work.

Thank you for the suggestion. Would have done it but came down sick.
I was feeling kinda lousy when I posted but chalked it up to the nightmarishly long ride down to DC. Thought I’d feel better once I got in the saddle and pedaling.
But felt so crummy I thought I’d take a little nap first. Woke up from the nap covered in sweat but with the chills at the same time.
Turns out it’s a mild case of food poisoning, probably from all the rest stop food on the way here.
So, I got sidelined this time. Sucks because I was hoping to get a lot of riding in. Next time, tho!

With so much fire along the coast, we're seeing smoke even over here in the Phoenix area. Luckily for us, it's mostly way up in the atmosphere. Air quality is still "moderate." That faint red disk is the sun, not the moon.



I rode 40 miles this morning, through Gilbert and Mesa along the Poweline trail. All the smoke kept it pleasantly cool.



Smoke is OK, but no dust allowed!



Got about 250 miles on the Hot Wheels bike so far.

Got off to a late start, lost time thinking I had a mechanical that turned out to be a saddlebag buckle rattling on my seatpost, then stopped to talk bikes for a few when I unexpectedly ran up in an old friend - but it was still a good morning on my Mercian Vincitore fixed-gear with 22.8 miles and a bunch of climbing...

After a week of rain and cool temps, I was able sneak off for a 63-miler up north.

Seasons are definitely changing and the trees are starting to show color.



The Canadian Pigeons are back.



Popped into Ryerson Conservation area.



The entry road is a "tunnel of trees".



There are several historic cabins on the grounds.

This morning I got the Bates out to the Connecticut border and back, 47 miles in total. Beautiful weather, 75 and sunny. Nlerner inspired me to hit the neighboring state. An old loop I haven't done in a couple of years.

Very nice riding day so took a ride up to Alma on the bike trail and the long way home by way of road 698 and went by the high wetlands l pond lake. Did it on the Mesa CSX Clunker challenge bike very nice ride likely the last time I will get to ride this rout So way to many photo's .

Yesterday, just before dark and after all the chores and dog walks of the day were finished, I squeezed in a 70th birthday ride around the neighborhood on the Nishiki Cresta GT I got several months ago and have ridden very little. That was my valiant attempt to begin the third third of my life in good form. The bike itself needs some changes from its pristine stock configuration; wider bars moved up and back, barcons, aero levers, different saddle. Can't believe how much I dislike downtube shifters. More stuff to keep me busy.

I rode my wheelbarrow out to the garden today and brought home a winter's worth of onions, maybe 100 lbs. or so. They have to cure there on the floor of the bike shop for two weeks or so, during which I will evidently not be doing much work on bikes. Maybe it will get me to ride my bike more.

Despite the overall level of chaos, I do like the way the LeJeune and the Gitane TdF are in perfect alignment. Get the little things right, and everything else will follow.

We were back in Vermont and my wife and I did a slow roll of 15 miles from Manchester to Dorset and back. Last week my back went out so I was glad to get on the bike at all. Still a little creaky. No pictures this time. I had a serious brain fart and didn't put her bike on the trunk rack before I started backing out of our parking spot. I'm tending to the bruises I caused it. This week I'm going to switch her from drop bars to VO Milano bars with 3x10 triggers. This has been a long time coming, and I think it'll work well for her.
