Would I be correct in assuming that the "mesh" on both sides of the rear wheel is to prevent skirt entanglement?

When I was in Italy in 2013 I saw a nun riding an Italian version of a city bike. There were similar guards, only much larger and made of what appeared to be leather laced to the rear triangle (leave it to the Italians to do it in style), which I assumed were to prevent a robe or skirt from becoming entangled in the rear spokes.

It's very possible? Not sure but it would make sense

my answer keeps not posting..hmm

anyways, tx for asking no, not yet. i am still with the bike share program so am not in a rush. plus i prefer to bike early in the morning and the bike shop doesn't open till 10am..but i must make the effort. i am still debating if i should check out Walmart again but read some of the posts on their bikes. it was good info. still, some of people at work bought theirs from there and have been fine with them. their commutes are short.

btw, i recently started to have lower back pain. i never paid attention to the bumps on the road but i guess my body is not used to it. i am going to try to learn more so i can fix this. was planning on talking with the bike shop guy about all this. he said they might be getting a liv flourish 4 which might be right for me. we shall see.. tx again!

Pull off the current pedals and let us know if they are 9/16 or 1/2 or something different entirely. Generally these days most pedals for adult bikes are 9/16 but you have have your local shop double check.

I already pulled off the pedals and tried the 9/16 but they were smaller than the "hole" in the cranks. I guess I'd better have them checked with the local shop. Thanks for replying😊

Well if the pedals are smaller then you might be dealing with some odd size. I know back in the early 80s Shimano did Dyna-Drive but I cannot imagine they would use that still after it never really caught on.
