Is it worth upgrading an old MTB?
Okay so I have this old mtb that was pretty cheap back at that time(2012).
Bike was not ridden a lot until this year I started riding it.
I am 17 years old and i dont have money for a new bike, I do have some money that i want to spend on some new pedals, cranks, shifters and brakes.
If I was to save up for an entry bike it would take me more than one year to save up so my question is if it's worth upgrading this garbage to make it be a little less of a garbage
Btw the bike name is "Atala scoripon"

No to everything except pedals (those can be transferred to a new bike).
I'd personally look at the used market in your area and find a better bike before doing any upgrades. You can get a good older bike for light trail riding for under $200, at least where I am.

Agree with Katsup. Save your money. Not worth upgrading at all. You could get a great used, name brand hardtail for a few hundred (probably the cost of those items you mentioned).

I checked if there are any good older bikes for around 200$ in my area and there are none.
There's a few good ones but they are like 350$, will keep an eye out for good deals

Save money for a new bike but sometimes do some little upgrades just for make the ride more confortable for example a new pair of grips or pedals will absolutely improve a bit more but also you must stay in the same price range (well... 30$ pedals are not wort on that bike). Don't worry to much , i used a similar bike too when i start enjoyng this sport and now i own 4 bikes. Just enjoy riding and when you can but a better bike

I would ride it in all its hideousness, learn to make it work as well as it possibly can. When the bike can't do it the rider has to---you can learn all your offroad techniques and tricks (manuals, wheelies,. bunny hops, whatever that jumping thrust thing is called ... learnt o make the back end go exactly where you want it, sideways, up, or down. Beat that bike as well as it can be beaten. Have you ever seen video of Peter Sagan riding a road bike over a car?
When you can work that bike like a trials rider .... whatever bike you can find and afford to replace it weith will take you a hundred times farther than if you bought an excellent bike you coun't really ridse.
I know, because that is what i did.
I started a long time ago with a bike like that, A Univega DS-90 i think it was. It was a sub-entry-level bike ... but I learned to ride it because it wouldn't get out of its own way.
Fast forward a few decades, i quit riding ans tried to start again,. I got a really nice full-suspension bike ... and road it like a crippled old lady, because I had forgotten how to really Ride a bike. The bike could do anything ... i just don't know how to make it do anything.
Interesting ... I know some Ukrainians, some Austrians, Czechs, Hungarians .... but no one from Croatia, and now I swear I have seen two people from Split posting in the past two weeks. isn't cycling season about over over there now? i thought it would be getting kind of wintry.

How much money do you have to spend right now? Are you riding this bike on actual mountain bike trails? If so, I can only recommend be careful and start saving for a used hardtail mountain bike. For now, spend as little as possible on this bike. Keep looking at used bikes. Prices often drop in the winter if it snows where you live because nobody is buying bikes (except fat bikes) to ride in the snow. You might get lucky.

I think that's the best way to get into the sport of mountain biking... or even cycling in general.
Don't go out and spend a small fortune on a bike before you know if you're really into it or not.
That's what I did years and years ago when I got back into biking as an adult. I got a decent inexpensive bike I could hit real trails with... road the you know what out of it and in the process learned how to ride real trails correctly... then when it hit me I really love this and want to stick with it.... then I went out and invested in building a much more expensive ride.
