I rode my pimped out Gran(d) Sport(s) in the last 2 Eroica California events, sent artwork to Spectrum Embroidery to have them make a custom jersey, and a warm-up for nlerner
This year I'm taking my Centurion Pro Tour down the coast to Eroica with davester and friends, so my kit required modification:
Inspired by my bike mechanic, Straightblock
If you're going to cosplay, you gotta get the proper costume. Or, to paraphrase my publicist and bike chauffeur @Andy_K, proper bike clothing.

Not custom, bought it right from the Masi USA website. You just have to sort through all of the BMX stuff (Haro) and look around. I bet you could do what Gugie suggests though. seems like as long as you have something they can scan, art work isn't even an issue.

I couldn't find anything outside of bitmaps, but now that they've converted it, you can order a SunTour jersey like mine, or even scale the sizing up or down without a charge for artwork. PM me if interested.

I scored these Bontrager Classique shoes for $10 (+$14 shipping) and they even fit. They appear to have been worn once or twice at best. I looked them up and original price was $260...not too bad for $24 😁. I then stumbled on an eBay auction for NOS Shimano cleats, that will work perfectly with my Dura Ace pedals. They even have the little triangle cut out in front. The cleats were without hardware so I was able purchase another set of Shimano SPD cleats just for the screws and rectangular washers, a good purchase for another $8, IMO.
I love the look and feel of the shoes, and that the soles don’t flex every time I pedal. Shoes have always been the tough part of this ride for me. Last year I used some low end Shimano’s that worked ok, but the Velcro straps made pedal entry a bit fussy.

I guess I'd better check in.
1. Craig (Straightblock), Fresno CA.
2. Route I think I signed up for La Villa Dello Scalatore but I may just do the Santa Lucia.
3. Planning to ride my 1972 Nishiki Professional
3A. Gearing 48-34 chainrings, 13-30 or 34 on the back. I was a lot better climber at 22 than I am now at 64. Tires are Specialized Roubaix 30/32s.
4. Arriving Saturday morning. I've made 2 reservations. If my wife comes we'll stay in Cambria on Moonstone Drive. If she can't make it I have my hedge reservation at a basic place in San Simeon.

Per Eroica rules (Article 23, Disqualifications) any deviation from the prescribed route can result in a disqualification and a subsequent 2 year ban from the event.
If you ride from Cambria to Cayucos in the morning while the longer rides are in effect, (and then turn around to catch the Piedras Blancas route) then you're also deviating from the prescribed route and become subject to disqualification.
You can do the 33 mile Piedras Blancas route in the morning, and then sign out at the start/finish line. Then, you can ride in the afternoon from Cambria to Cayucos and back. Eroica-CA will have left that route, and you can ride it then without issue. I did that in 2019.
I also recommend low gears, 34x28 = 33", or even lower.

However, I'm sure if you didn't check in at Cayucas and get your passport stamped, this is one of those rules that is completely unenforceable. I imagine that one couldn't partake of the food at the Cayucas Pier without checking in, but if you rode down to the pier and turned around without your number on self or body, there's no way for Eroica, Inc. to enforce it. It's not a closed course, anybody can ride on Hwy 1. So, if you wanted to do Cambria to Cayucas and back in the morning, and didn't start at the official start (50 yards down the road would work), How would that be enforced?
I highly doubt anybody would care, even Eroica, Inc. Also, you're paying for all the aid stations whether you partake or not. Morally, legally, ethically, I don't see an issue.
But why not sleep in and do it all in the afternoon? A loophole that isn't likely to be taken by anyone. I'm not sure why you'd need a 33" gear on that route!

Hello EroiCA 2020!
My name is Eddie Corletto. I will be riding the Santa Lucia route for the second consecutive year. Last year I rode my 1987 Bottacchia (c-record), and I am not sure if I will be riding the same bike this year, or my Olmo Syntex SLR with Campagnolo SR (1978-82). This year, I will camping at San Simeon starting Friday, and leaving Monday before noon....

I have these shoes in white but I can’t bear to use them in toe clips for the ride. They are a great shoe and I have done century rides with no issues at all but I was using clipless pedals. I picked up a set of vintage road shoes to use for Eroica.

Got the Eroica bike mostly finished. Hopefully a little warmer this weekend so I can test drive her then trim the cables and put on the bar tape. There's a slim chance since I'm getting in pretty good winter miles that I might spice it up and change to the compact crank for an authentic Super Record 52-42.
Don't worry, I'm going to change out the deep dish valve stems too.

Not on purpose, but I did a fair bit of walking in my Bonty classique shoes and they are not great but not horrible either. Those Bonty shoes are supposed to be Kangaroo leather and only took a couple hundred miles to break in by tying them a bit tight (no socks) and they molded to my feet. I would have prefered to use my modern shoes but like I said I didn't want to mark them up as the sole is white and only appears to be painted, along with the toeclip concern I had. These old shoes I picked up fit great as well but I have yet to try them except on the trainer. I may try to find some of those cleats just in case.

First timer to Eroica
In answer to the roll call, I'm riding Eroica for the first time, taking my 1958 Olmo Professional Deluxe on the Piedras Blancas route. The bike has the original Magistroni 50/47 chaining and Regina 14-22 freewheel. Based on my rides on basically flat roads I'll probably be in the 47 chaining and the 20 or 22 cog for most of the ride. Does anyone know if there any surprise sections where my low 57.7 hear inches and my 69 year old legs may not cut it?
Thanks for any input.

Ive been doing this to all my boots and leather shoes since my Marine Corps Drill Instructor made us all do it to our new leather boots.(30 years ago) No blisters or hot spot issues. It works.

From my post in the Velo-Retro ride for tomorrow, March 1, 2020
Hi All,
I won't be able to ride with you tomorrow although I had desperately wanted to. The Feb. 2 Velo-Retro ride for me was very good, especially as part of my Eroica California 2020 training. Between that and my Feb. 8 ride in Long Beach / Signal Hill I probably rode and felt the best I ever have in 5 years. Unfortunately, about 3 hours after my Feb. 8 Saturday ride, I developed back and then left thigh pain, especially when walking and standing upright. Long story short, I've been sidelined now for 3 weeks, 2 weeks of which I literally wasn't able to walk without pain. An MRI shows I've got some slight disc protrusions at L3-4 on the left, and L4-5 across both sides, something that is new. After steroids and NSAIDS, plus PT stretching, my pain is thankfully gone but I've lost 11 pounds, some of which is lower leg muscle due to inactivity and numbness in the thigh and shin. I now have some numbness in my left knee and shin which makes it hard to reliably walk and feel stable although I know my muscles are still working. I'm working on walking more each day, and will incorporate some trainer cycling as I'm able.
Needless to say, not sure where this will lead but hopefully I will be able to recover eventually and be able to get back on the bike. At this point, I won't be able to ride the 2020 75 mile Santa Lucia Eroica route I was hoping to ride and not sure I could even ride the short 35 mile route. However, barring any issues regarding Coronavirus exposure, I still plan to attend Eroica and encourage everyone else to attend if able.
Please say Hi to everyone for me, convey my regrets, and hope to see you guys in May or June.
Bart
If I'm unable to ride, I'll try to volunteer at Eroica and help any way I can. I have spoken to Kaori Peters, Event Coordinator for Eroica California 2020. I gave her my offer to sponsor a tent(s) for use at the Eroica Festival at the Pinedorado Grounds / Veteran's Building area or tents at any rest stops that are needed, up to $1000 for the weekend. She and her other staff members will consider it. I will hopefully be able to attend and be reasonably mobile for the event. I still plan on picking up my numbers and registration materials even if I am unable to ride. I've been recruiting people from the Velo-Retro ride and for sure, at least 20 people are coming from there, with about 10 for sure unable to go due to other time commitments.
There's also a fellow on Classic Rendesvous who is looking for a ride to and from Los Angeles to Cambria. He needs help for the travel parts of the trip. If you can help, please let me know and I can put you together. Last 30 days so let's make it a strong turn out for both the Classic and Nova rides.
BTW, there's about 40 spots left for the Saturday dinner, and spots are open for the swap, concours, and display sections of the event on Friday and Saturday, remember there are nominal costs for each. My understanding from Kaori is that Festival setup will be on Thursday and Friday. They will be sharing the eastern Veteran's Building Parking lot with the regular Friday Farmer's market (win-win for townspeople and the market), all of which will increase the visibility of the Eroica event to the town.

I just heard that Sea Otter Classic at Laguna Seca has been postponed due to Coronavirus. Any rumblings about Eroica, with the event being kind of a world wide gathering, run by Italians now that Italy has been deeply affected (as have other places) ? Just wondering. Stay safe, every one. The LA Marathon goes on Sunday as scheduled, not so with some other events. 🤞

Unless this turns out to be closer to the zombie apocolypse than I think it is, I'm riding regardless. I don't really "need" the aid stations, they're just a "nice to have".
Who's going regardless?

Given that Sea Otter was just postponed, it very much has crossed my mind that Eroica might be cancelled or rescheduled. I'll attend unless the situation gets much worse.
However, given that Eroica has the Italian connection, they may opt to cancel given what is going on over there. Strade Bianchi pro and fondo were cancelled.
