Creaky crank on a brand new bike

Two weeks ago I bought a new bike - a 2007 Everest Sherpa. It's great, except for some insane creaking noises coming from the crank area. And by insane I mean really loud noises probably 8-10 times on every revelation whenever there is even the slightest pressure on the pedals.

It seems this is a common problem, but I'm surprised to see it this bad after only two weeks of easy on-road use. My previous bike, a Scott Purgatory, started getting these noises after about four years of daily use, including a lot of tough offroading, but not nearly as bad as it is now.

Any ideas of what the reason could be, or advice on how to fix it?

Take it back where you bought it and tell them to fix it.

I agree with the previous poster, but if the shop is far away i would take a look at a couple of things.

If the bike has exterior bottom bracket cups, I would first tighten them up to see if that takes care of it. Second, I would tighten the pedals into the crank arms.
