That's a legitimate point but why do labels keep making records when they are effectively a talent agency? The production costs of music are nearly trivial and the distribution costs is nil so the artists could and should handle all that themselves. The labels just provide media hype and intellectual property lawyers.

I think this makes your point a lot more clearly. Trading tapes and file sharing are morally equivalent but not economically equivalent.

There are still certain labels that give a lot of cachet to the talent they decide to put on their rosters. That was always the upside of the label system, the role of the A&R guy as curator.

That was pretty much my point when I said talent agency and T13's when he said "rock star". But curating doesn't seem like it really amounts to much more than a tumblr account in the current economy couldn't that stuff be handled socially with upvotes and user ratings?

Yeah but people still have that old mentality of "making it big". It's like the 1950's aspiration to be a housewife with two kids and a dog and a husband and a white picket fence, etc etc. The world isn't the same place as it was in the 50's(thank god), so it's simply a business model that hasn't been phased out yet, and the companies are milking every up and comer for everything they can, before everyone learns or becomes less lazy, to do things on their own. Plus, Coke or Monster energy drinks probably own half the record labels out there. It's a seedy seedy business, full of attorneys. yuck.

i spent 9 months in music school during which time we had guest lecturers come in from the industry that gave us insignt on what it was to be "successful" and everything i heard made me want to change my intended career path more and more every time. needless to say by the end of the 9 months i had a much better idea of what my "job" actually would be, and i wanted nothing to do with it.

the "50s house wife" dream is alive and well on staten island.

I can't remember where I saw their name before, and I rarely listen to a band because of their name, but this was one that I had to hear what they'd sound like and they did not disappoint.

Same here. The name seems ridiculous and badass all at once.
