Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Our HVAC guy wants to put the registers in different places - which, having no ducts anymore, we could. BUT he also wants to put the unit in the attic crawlspace, which makes sense from the point of view of the physics (centralize heat/cooling and the farthest registers are no longer the length of the house away), but the idea of a gas-fired furnace in the attic of our wood frame house makes both Mrs. GeneJockey and me freak out - "I'm gonna light a fire in your attic to keep you warm!"

And yet I understand this is all the rage. And I haven't heard of any problems with it. But "fire in the attic" is a nonstarter with us. We'll see where we end up.

We have fire in the attic in our wood framed house. Three of them in fact (gas). Also, two gas fired water heaters in the attic. Had two of them in our last house. Everybody around here has them in the attic since we don’t have basements. Have never heard of it being a problem or resulting in a house fire.

Ah, but you see, you're using REASON, whereas we are not. We just both have the same visceral reaction to the idea, which means no matter how safe we know it is intellectually, we'll be constantly uneasy about it. Anxiety Disorders R Us.

Well, look at it this way - wouldn’t you rather have a fire start above your head rather than under your ass while you sleep?

if it’s under you, it’s like you are on a rotisserie. If it’s above you you have a chance to see, feel, smell it before it roasts you.

We live in a ranch house with a crawlspace under the house, and the furnace in the garage, so it's not so much under us as off to the side.
