Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I didn't say it stopped snowing when I descended to the lower elevation. I said visibility improved. There was also snow at 400 FASL.

dewalt’s 13” planer comes with helical cutters and is quite robust if it also fits your purpose. Have never seen it on Craigslist though, buyers more than usually keep them until the estate sale pries it from their dead cold hands.

I probably mentioned this before, but other than the router/table and ridgid oscillating belt sander, I’ve sourced everything from Craigslist. $50 for a 15” drill press, 125 each for the 13” planer and 14” band saw with 6” riser, and the jointer. That’s why having to bid up to $75 for an 8” jointer plane was though.
That's a heck of a score. Hell, multiple scores. Me thinks your CL market is a little better than my CL market - deals like that would be exceptionally rare and would be around only very briefly. People ask $200+ for old Craftsman 6" benchtop jointers, here. $400 would be a screaming deal for a free-standing 6" jointer.

I do really want a nice bandsaw, too, but I want one of the newer steel-framed jobbers with 12"+ of re-saw.

Many years ago I learned that if you turn the lights off in those situations, you can see the edge of the road, at least. Turn them on, of course, for oncoming traffic

It definitely seems to be the case, heck, the person I purchased the drill press gave me a craftsman 6” benchtop jointer (sans the motor), all cast and milled iron from 60ies for free. The sucker was/is heavier than the drill press and is sure to be a contributing factor any future hernias! It’s while searching for a motor to fix to that one I found the second jointer.

I have to say, I scoured Craigslist daily and waited a long time till I found the deals.

From time to time I find that a particular job would be much quicker with a table saw, but I’m ascared of them suckers so much that I’ve managed to do without till now. Router scares me almost just as much, so I’m using it sparingly.

I skimmed this. During my active weight loss period, I paid attention to my protein intake. It was difficult to get more than 100 grams/ day. 60-80 was quite easy. I am not an athlete, though, and probably get in the 60-85 range, daily. And I am much more sedentary than I was in my ute, or even 10 years ago.

When I was filling out my hand tools, I had set up an RSS feed so that I'd get notifications within 15 minutes of an ad popping up. I'm not sure if I can still do that, but I'll look in to it if I get an itch.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I picked up a table saw the other week. It's just a little one, though.

I have a healthy fear of the TS and the router, though the new router table seems SO smooth and powerful that it's... well, there's no drama. Oh, and you might like this - I made a coping sled last week for doing things like door panel rails. It's got an acrylic guide for riding along the fence and getting nice, square cuts. Works a friggin' treat. Not bad for some scrap 3/4 ply, a few bucks worth of hardware and one pretty decent clamp.

Long ago when I was very young, maybe 20 y.o., I worked for my uncle who was a building contractor. One rainy day, too wet to work, he needed to speak with one of the carpenters. Naturally, some of them were ensconced at the local bar. As we walked in, I looked the length of the bar and every carpenter had a hand wrapped around a glass of beer and not a few of those hands were missing part of a finger. I worked most of my life in woodworking and boat building and with powered machinery. I've worked diligently to maintain a high level of attention around those machined. Not just often, but every single day for 50 years or so.

As long as one doesn't outpace one's headlights, it's fine. So, I was going like 20mph.

The cemetery is about 200 years old and belongs to the family that owns the surrounding acreage.

And those are clouds.

Truth. Besides being just short of 70, I’ve been getting Eligard injections for the last year and a half.

Rightfully so. I got careless one day working on a home project, thankfully the reflexes saved me from losing a digit. There's still impaired sensation in one finger. I have a photo around here somewhere.
