Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The two main mass market brands we have at the shop are Specialized and Fuji. In the past, our inventory has leaned more toward SBC than Fuji. So far this year, mostly Fuji, mainly because they had bikes to ship.

I have MS shifters on my Specialized Sirrus. Haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Yea, DVT most certainly was brought on by Covid, seems as if the virus did some damage to my blood vessels. I've fully recovered now but it wasn't fun for a while there.

My LBS sells Spec, may pop in this weekend to see what they have in stock in my size. I suppose being tall gives me an advantage because ~60cm bikes aren't as commonly needed as 54/56.

I've toyed with the idea of just upgrading the Madone to R7000 because the current group is pretty worn out (still have original shifters, FD/RD, crank, bottom bracket). I also like the idea of having a 2nd bike in general, and given that I have minimal interest in off-road and rarely spend time on epic descents in the wet, a rim brake road frame still suits me best and would allow me to keep using my Ardennes wheels which are 11sp ready. I guess I could test ride some disc bikes, but tbh every time I ride with someone on a disc bike they just make the worst noises, and without doing wet/steep rides they don't really offer any advantages for me.

Yeah, I feel you on the second bike thing, but I would definitely give some disc bikes a test ride. "Good enough" has never stopped me from preferring "way better," and then it opens things up (literally) for wider tires, which is nice for non-flyweights (though I think that some of the new rim brake calipers might be able to clear up to 30mm - one of the shop guys like Jones would know better). And while obnoxious honking is pretty much unavoidable in heavy rain, discs shouldn't be noisy if you're sticking to fair weather - if they're noisy, it's a maintenance thing, like someone with a squeaky chain.

Either way, be sure to be available for at least one ride when I'm back in the neighborhood, hopefully this year. I really want to ride over to the Triple Crossing with the pizza oven in the SE part of the metro.

My mom and brother visited for thanksgiving, took them there for exactly that. A friend is one of the brewers so he sent us home with some limited run crowlers. 10/10.

I took the family there on one of the trips last winter. I knew the beer would be good but I was impressed with the pizza as well. I also need to grab a crowler or 4-pack to bring back to one of my IPA-lovin' buddies in MN.

Cars these days are so reliable. The Dodge just passed 70K with no issues, whereas other cars I had from before 2000 you were always wondering when the next shoe was going to drop. Funny there weren't companies selling aftermarket extended warranties back when cars were crap, innit?

I gotta say, the disk brakes on the Canyon give me a lot more confidence on descents.

It's a lot like Vegas - the companies selling extended warranties are making a lot of money off the people buying them. That said, there are some cars I would not own out of warranty due to the cost of components if you have a problem.

You could start a thread about it in the 41. A disk brake thread. I wonder how that would go?

Well, it would certainly be novel, if nothing else.

Only during warranty. Same with BMW and Porsche in my mind.

I was sorely disappointed in the mass of my Microshift 9-speed rear derailleur - significantly heavier than even midrange LX 9-speed from days of yore. That seems to be par for the course though. Even though 15 years earlier, you could get stuff 25% lighter, they make the new low-cog-count stuff super heavy, cuz how else are they gonna goad you into getting 13-speed

The guys in the back room usually get pretty tired of me:

Extended warranty - nope

Wheel warranty - nope

Door ding warranty - nope

Glass etching - nope

Is there any kind of protection I can sell you - nope.

All that stuff they try to push in the backroom often provides a better profit margin for the dealer than does the car itself.
