If you are not riding tubeless then 'Slime' filled tubes are the hot ticket.
Once I did that in Bakersfield Ca. most of my flatting troubles were over.
The stuff worked like a charm.

I wouldn't use tumbleweeds as a guide. I think no-trees when I think tumbleweeds. Goatheads don't grow right under trees for the most part, but the presence of trees is no guarantee of goathead freedom.

I ride a lot in Southern CA and I kept reading about Goatheads and did not understand how "thorns" would be a real problem. Most of my riding is on the road or maintained trails. I went out with some of the youngsters to an offroad area nearby in the corner of a large park. Five of us pulled bikes out and rolled down a dirt hill to an area with some dirt berms. Within 3 minutes we had 8 flat tires out of 10. I looked down at the tires on my Peugeot Canyon Express and they looked like this (not my pic):
I was the only one that did not have flats, I was running puncture proof tires that came on the bike. I pulled 30-50 thorns out of each tire, no leaks. Can't seem to find a pic of bike/tires and this one is currently buried in the back of the pile.
