VO Grand Cru vs Halo Retro 6D hubs

Happy new year to everyone !

I will build a new wheel set soon with HPlusSon Archetype rims but I hesitate for the hubs I will choose.

I would like to know if someone have experiences with VO Grand Cru Touring hubs or Halo Retro 6D?

rear wheel is 130mm, 8 speeds, 32 holes
front is 100mm 32 holes

both hubs set are around 200€ (~220$)

A friend has the VO hubs for a road bike- he got them because they are silver and well made. If he hadnt wanted silver, I doubt he would have purchased them as there are tons of hubs that are of equal quality for less money and less weight. Example- Bitex ra12 rear hub weights 5.5ox less and costs $40 less.

The VO hubs are nicely polished and dead simple to service. That, to me, are the selling points. If you want a quality silver hub- this works. If you want a simple to service hub- this works.
The ability to easily replace a broken spoke on the road is invaluable to many who tour and rando.

Round holes or shaped "lightening" holes in the flanges?
Shimano or Campagnolo splines?

I like round holes in the flanges but prior to reliability.
I need a Shimano freewheel body

I'm looking for some polished hubs and I saw some other possibilities like Sun XCD (difficult to find a retailer) and Dia Compe (more expensive)

I share Mstatemglfr on how it's easy to fix a broken spoke with the VO.

Always late to the party but will leave this here for future readers looking for opinions.

I have a set of H Plus Son Archetype polished rims with Chris King silver hubs. I loved this wheelset so much I moved them from my restored classic steel Dave Moulton Fuso to my Ti Seven daily rider. I replaced them with the Halo Retro 6D, which was about half the price. Great looking set of wheels that are solid, roll really nice and are relatively light.

I love Velo Orange products but can't recommend the Halo set enough...especially for a retro build.

Thx for your review even if it's late, like you said it's always useful for people who are looking for info on Halo 6D hubs.

On my side I didn't chose any of two ^_^
too expensive so I've founded some Dura Ace 7700 hubs set almost NOS for a very good price.

I really like this wheelset even if it's not as nice as the Halo hubs
