Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

sram force with ultegra brakes

i have the current force set up on ultegra 6700 brakes but it feels a little squishy. is that normal? i adjusted the tension so that the brake pads are close to the surface of the rim and it feels firm at first when pulling on the levers but it gets softer once the pads are against the rim.

Per Shimano's compatibility charts, 6700 brakes only work with newest wave of 105, Ultegra, and DA levers, and are not compatible with your Force levers. Newest rev. uses longer pull and cable travel, so new levers work with old brakes with a squishy feeling, but old levers are not supposed to work with new brakes.

People will argue with this, but there have probably been 6 threads on this same topic in the past 3 months.

6600 brakes used the old standard pull so not applicable in this case. There is definitely a difference in pull between 5500/5600 brifters and 5700 brifters. I upgraded to the 5700 with old 5500 brakes and lost a lot of modulation. Swapped out to 5700 and I got it back and it feels better overall.

As near as I can determine, the new 5700/6700/7800 (if that's newest DA) use a cam action in the shifter, so it is not only longer pull but pulls at different rates through the stroke. I would assume it is larger ratio at first to cover air gap and then smaller ratio to allow fine modulation.

If this is correct, when you pair new levers with 5600/6600/old DA brakes, you have enough travel, but end up braking in the larger ratio area which makes them feel squishy.

On this theory, old levers with new brakes means you run out of travel before you engage brakes, unless you run the pads exceptionally close to the rim.

Old levers from every company worked with old brakes from everyone else. I would guess Shimano did this change to brag about superior braking within their groupsets, in an aim to reduce the effectiveness of Tektro and other brakes with 5700/6700 levers.

Sorry I don't know the right DA part #'s, too poor to pay much attention.

Edit - though I hear you about the 'too poor for DA parts.' I have a Dura Ace BB and that's it!
