Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Black only. When I see colored tape I think either its a woman's bike, someone new to cycling, or some weird Fred who thinks every inch of the bike needs to be color coordinated.
Pshaw! While black bar tape won't lose you any hot points, it certainly won't gain you any, either.
New, clean and flawless is only that. If it can't stand to show a little dirt or wear, or if it's merely a safe choice, it's NOT hot.

To each his own, I think colored and white bar tape or saddles look tacky or like you're trying too hard. This is not a hot or not point of view, it's a matter of looking "right".

Yes, but this is the "hot r not" thread, not the "proper r not" thread.
So what about tan leather tape on C&V bikes? Proper, hot, r neither?

Bar tape is to be black. The exceptions are for kids, women, and just about no one else. If you like it that's fine but white looks like dirt color in a week and color matching is just... Attention *****ish for an adult man.

Also if it's not proper or right, how could you think it qualifies as "hot"?

Well, I don't know about you, but when I think 'hot,' I don't think 'cautious, conventional and meek,' I think 'daring, audacious, and provocative,' none of which are particularly synonymous with 'proper.'

By the way, I'm more a proponent of 'righteousness' than 'hotness' when it comes to design, I'm just pointing out the difference.

Assless chaps would be daring, audacious, and provocative. Do you think those are hot as well?

Hot.

Well done. I briefly considered doing the DIY bamboo frame, but chickened out.

I bought a kit that had all the extra things you need (like the jig parts) to do it. Hero Bike.

Was actually quite easy and they had some quite detailed 'how to' videos. However, I do confess that I'm pretty handy and have built all sorts of things before (ex-highschool woodwork teacher and have worked as a rowing club 'boatman').

Had my first long ride on it today, including a couple of descents. It rides well with no problems (wobbles). Very smooth, but that could be the 440mm long chain stays as much as the bamboo tubing. Bottom bracket has a ton of carbon in it and there was no visible movement when under power.

2011 Guru Praemio frame with components transferred from my old bike. I have short legs/long torso so not much drop to bars. Might lose the spacers at some point and cut down the steerer tube.
