Continental GP 4000s vs. Ultra Sport
Anybody used both these tires? Would I see any significant improvement if I upgraded from Ultra Sport to GP 4000S? My ultra sport only have 500km (300mi) on them. I don't race, I usually ride 50km 4-5 times a week mostly on paved (asphalt) MUPs.
Thank you
Thank you

Our Highway 7 rep says it's normal for a GP4000 to get 2-3 times as many miles as an Ultra Sport, and a lot of people on this forum will tell you the GP4000 is the best combination of performance, puncture resistance, and durability available. I tend to agree.

The Ultra Sport is a nicely made basic tire, available with folding or wire bead. The GP4000 is folding only, lighter, has a more densely weaved casing, vectran anti-puncture belt, and a more durable tread. The combination of the denser casing fabric and tread give a more supple ride with better traction.

I love my GP4000s tires. Once in a while I think I want to try some Schwalbe Ultremo ZX's but then I don't know why I would risk it.

From my experience, the 3 Ultra sport tires I had wore out within 1000 km each. I hate them with a passion now.
No experience with 4000s, but the one GP 4 seasons tire I have is going strong after 1500km.

My ultrasports outlast my GP4000s (!)
The drawback is that they're noticeably heavier on the acceleration. I actually doubt it makes a difference at all on climbing and even on sprints, but I do notice the sprightlier pickup with the GP4000s.
The ultrasport is not a bad tire though - I have absolutely no problems with them, and even have them on my Cervelo until the GP4000s go on sale, and even then, I don't put them on until I'm in 'serious training' mode.
I don't think they're worht 2x (3x not on sale) the difference in price.

Get Specialized Turbo Cotton tyres and use latex tubes
the fastest tyres that I have used (and they don't puncture easily and last fairly long .... 1've had 1 pinch flat in more than 1200km .... I was experementing with tyre pressures and had them too low)....
grip is phenomenal. Don't use them in the wet though

i've had no complaints of my UltraSports, they've served me well with zero complaints. only flat i've had was a thorn I picked up on the MUP. next tire purchase though will have gp4000's simply cuz I haven't tried them yet. but I'll wait until there's a sale on the GP's before I buy 'em.

A six year dead thread revived and a new thread started just to bash a popular tire?
