Race Dots-Home Depot and Lowes sell the same thing in the hardware section for less than $10.

I glue for tts and pin for pretty much everything else. When I was racing collegiate most newbies would ask to get pinned before their race. We would usually do this one time for them, explain the technique (6-9 pins, through number, through jersey, out jersey back through number) and after that they were on their own. It's a pain to pin numbers on others. Fixing a pin is no problem, but doing many people is just annoying.

Pro tip from a cat 3, Steering wheel or pillow work pretty good to mimic a body shape.

I've never once asked someone to pin my number in some 220 or so races. Unless I'm pinning a skinsuit I don't need a pillow or anything like a body shape.

I can't get it right on a soft surface. I always lay it flat and start with the number on the front seam and that works well for my body size. I am an over pinner. Four corners, one on each short side and then two each on the long sides. I usually have one corner that I need to readjust (do that before putting on the side pins) but it has served me well.

I just use my lap. Put the sleeve hole over one knee to pull it flat.

The one time I tried a pillow (you guessed it) I pinned the number to the pillow.

I was thinking a pillow might be nice for napping while waiting for the next race.

My picture should be captioned "What a former race promoter does when he realizes he has 28,351 pins left over".

I literally have maybe 20 or 30 boxes of pins, each supposedly holding 1440 pins. On a good promoting day I'd use most of three boxes of pins, and since you have to order the boxes, I'd try and keep 10-15 in reserve.

I start pinning at one corner, usually the bottom right if I'm pinning on the right side. Then I move across the bottom, then up from the bottom row of pins. It's like spreading a decal - you don't put the corners of a large decal on and then stick the middle, you start at a corner and work your way to the opposite corner, smoothing down the decal as you go.

If I have a LOT of pins it means I pinned it on the way over to the race while I sat next to Junior. We're all talking, he's pointing out this or that, and I'm pinning absentmindedly while I'm paying attention to him. Only trick is to keep the number and the jersey sort of parallel, meaning the number doesn't bridge any jersey gaps and the jersey doesn't bridge any number gaps.

If it's 9 or 12 pins then I pinned it while I was on my own, probably picked up the number at registration and am pinning it on the ground nearby. Only reason to do it on the ground is that it's easier to keep track of the pins. In the car I just leave the pins in a door pocket and fish them out.

i'd love to see the aerodynamics of that job tested. based on what i've seen i'd wager that all those pins have a measurable (negative) impact on aerodynamics compared to a minimally-pinned number.

Another reason to glue - it is nicer to others / "safer", you know, that could have been somebody's eye.
2014 Murretta crit has a crash and somebody had their pins come out. Next race junior caught one.

Just got my numbers for Chico ans they're tiny! Like smaller than I could possibly fold a full size number. Really going to enjoy pinning these on and not worrying about pockets and seams and such!

Is the full number at least 18cm high by 16cm wide and digit 10cm high?
Is the line width at 15mm?
