Are Novara bikes safe?

Does anyone know if Novara bikes are safe? These are the old REI brand bikes. I'm looking at buying a used Novara Mia (women's commuter/cruiser style) bike. It's in good condition, maybe 5-10 years old, not sure. I read something on Wikipedia that there were some Novara bike frames that broke while in use, resulting in injuries and in lawsuits. Does anyone know more about this, or any help with this decision?
Thanks.

I wouldn't have had any concerns about safety of Novara bikes. The frame breaking thing is news to me. I would look for news or articles about that and find out what year(s) of bike it happened on. Probably a manufacturing defect limited to just one model year. Avoid that one. Or understand the breakage better and maybe we can figure out how to check whether a particular bike might be likely to experience that kind of failure.

All the ones I’ve ever seen are just your standard Taiwan bike. Perfectly fine.

Mine's only got 30,000 miles on it, so I don't know how it'll hold up over the long term yet.

Report back in ten years

I had a 2003 Novara Big Buzz that didn't break. Rode it a lot for three years before I got recumbentized. Then later my son rode it for a year or two and it didn't break.

I have 2 Novaras in the stable—a Safari and a Forza. They each have 6000-7000 miles and are going strong.

Now I am nostalgic for a coworker whose big buzz went into retirement with him a few years ago. I am sure he still rides it in his new home.
