HOT TOTALLY NUDE carbon drop handlebars (no handlebar tape)
Who else is going tape-free in 2020?

I found the single wrap on my drops wasn't enough. Everytime I dropped into them they felt too small. I wrapped them with an inner tube and then put the wrap back on to make them thicker. I need the thicker bars. No way could I go the naked route. But to each his own and glad you like it.

That is an odd build. Carbon bars and fancy wheels on a Schwinn hybrid but it looks like you did a good job on the build. Though I would not want to ride without bar tape. Especially for cyclocross but I wouldn't wrap yet because you might want to add some travel agents for the brakes. Linear pull brakes and short pull levers don't really go well together but hopefully it all works well for you.

This bike already came with mini-v-brakes on it (85mm brake arms), so no travel-agent needed. And I'm on the hoods almost 100% of the time, so I'm thinking of just leaving the handlebar tape off this time.

If you are just in the hoods, cut down the bars and save all the weight ; )
Me I couldn't run tapeless bars and wouldn't want to I would at least do some cloth tape or something thin and light just as a little extra protection for the bars and in case I decide to move my hands.

I like bar tape- its comfortable.
There is a reason why Benotto tape stopped being popular over a quarter century ago and untaped bars only further highlight it.
But there are always exceptions, so go wild.

I had tape only on the drops, back in the days when we actually used our drops.
It wasn't a particularly good idea.

With hot humid summers, I'd be worry about slipping my hands off when not riding on the hoods. Granted, my gloves might probably prevent this. But after learning my lesson on a different bike, I'm sticking to taping my bars. Plus, it offers much more comfort, especially on longer brevet rides.

We used to use a plasticy kind of woven tape; most likely a knock-off of Benotto (I am sure it came from K-Mart). Slippery when wet, and hard as steel.... I bet it lasted forever though since it didn't absorb any sweat (being plastic and all LOL). My family was never one to splurge and replace items that wore out or got nasty as they aged, and periodic replacement of bar tape would have been high on the list as unnecessary expenditures.

I was wondering the same thing. The clean look in the OP’s pics is awesome. But that slick CF finish must be slippery when it gets wet...especially if you ride without gloves.
Side question...has anyone ever achieved the same internal routing using traditional aluminum bars...either produced that way, or after-market modification without a significant loss of integrity?

Riding without tape is a personal choice, but you should plug your bar ends as a safety measure. An unplugged bar can be very dangerous in a fall.
