This song reminds me of our present day. I play this to scare away the solicitors In 1349 the Black Death reached Norway. Great name for an extreme metal band.

Yet, countries around the world are fighting it and succeeding.

New Zealand was COVID free for almost a month before a couple of imported cases. The last time time they had more than 4 new cases in a single days was May 1.

China had a massive outbreak, but now only a scattering of new cases.

Most countries in Europe still have a few cases, but are down to a fraction of their peak.

Even in the USA, not all states are equivalent. Now, I think the states that are doing better now had a worse history of early spread, and may be impacted by the mythical "herd immunity".

In many other US communities, less than 1 in 1000 have had the disease. A lot of people are still managing to avoid it. Many of my acquaintances would fall in a vulnerable category, an it just isn't worth the risk. Even for myself, I believe I could fight the disease, but it could be a huge stress and financial burden. And, if it scarred the lungs, it could decrease my overall life expectancy. I'd just rather not. If I managed to kill my mother, it would weigh heavily on me.

The time to fight this disease was in January and February when our president was busy playing golf and hosting rallies.

We are now in a tough spot with more new cases a day than Vietnam, Cuba, Greece, Finland, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Hungary, South Korea, and Thailand have had TOTAL CASES COMBINED.

It isn't that those countries didn't struggle with the virus. But, they got the spread of the disease under control using social isolation, masks, contract tracing, quarantining the sick, etc.

Why are we still reading about people who are feeling sick, yet choose to go to a party or wedding?

At this point, we can hope for a highly efficacious vaccine.

Yup, they are lying here in Tejas. The Rio Grande Valley hospitals are maxed out so covid patients are being flown to San Antonio. 4th of July has been fun sitting here in the AC watching Gordon Ramsay Uncharted. Yee-Haaaw .... Going to ride late evening into the night to beat the heat. Set up my bike lights out in the oven. Staying isolated and bored out of mind..

...high 90's here, but not over 100*. Did you know the Home Depot is open on the 4th ? Me neither, but I ran out of white primer for my Follis project, so I went over there an' bought me some.

Personally I do drive some into heavier infested regions. However, only as necessary, and I have some strict personal rules such as no stopping for groceries/food/restaurants as I head out. I bring all my food and water with me. Ok, so I've found a gas station with reasonable prices about 30 miles north of here, but that is about as far north as I've bought gas. I have a small gas can that I take if needed.

You know, the question I keep asking people who say "people are going to die, oh well" is, "So if it was guaranteed the people who died would be you and your family, you're cool with that?"

Strangely, not one of them has seen fit to answer that question...

Perhaps we need to criminalize "intentional transmission" somewhat like is done with HIV/AIDS.

Wikipedia: Criminal transmission of HIV

Wikipedia: Criminal transmission of HIV in the United States

Countries with generally successful control measures like South Korea were very strict with their quarantines.

And Texas with our lieutenant governor telling us to sacrifice the elderly lives and yourself to keep the economy open. The Twilight Zone is real this time.

Normally speaking, if you are sick, weak, genetically disadvantaged, handicapped mentally or physically....you would either be predated upon, or unable to find a mate to thus pass on your particular weakness or defect. We have created a situation by which those factors are no longer a determiner for our survival and as a whole are creating a weaker race over time due to it. We are counting on creating cures and treatments as the God of our own existence rather than counting on the process by which we all got to this point. Our compassion will likely end up being what kills us, if not our complacency about other pressing issues.
This argument is used frequently, and it misses entirely what it means to be human. Compassion isn't a flaw, it's a survival mechanism. Furthermore, our ability to communicate is a radical survival mechanism in the natural world. We can exchange and pass on ideas, adapting our behavior far faster than any physical evolutionary mechanism allows. Time will tell if our evolutionary path flourishes or peters out, but it's the path we're on and it's who we are.

Calling for the sacrifice of the Others plays well when you're not one of the Others.

Divide and conquer, baby, divide and conquer.

... I'm gonna have to venture into the mysterious world of do it yourself on the 'puter vinyl graphics for this one. So I spent a couple off hours in the hottest part of the day working up this one, that I stole off the internet from a picture of somebody's classic Follis motorcycle. Still needs work, but I think maybe this is what I'll go with. I hope I don't catch the bug die before this one is finished. This image will look nice against a faux flamboyant red downtube.
