Shimano 600 brake lever ?

i tried search fist but no joy

i wrongly assumed the shimano 600 brake levers on my restoration were identical. they are mirror images on the internal when looking from the handlebar side if that makes sense. i can find no indication which is left and right with the serial #'s etc

edit: woops they are clearly marked if hoods are peeled back far enough

never mind. they are clearly marked if you peel the hoods back far enough. if you saw my hoods you would know why i am careful with them. they are falling apart. is there an aftermarket hood that fits the shimano 600 levers ?

thks

Is there a part number stamped on them somewhere? BL-6208 or BR-6208?
BR= right brake lever
BL= left brake lever

Don't know that it makes a difference if you'd rather have your levers angle the other way on the bars.

EDIT:
Oooops.... I'm wrong. Thats the reach on the calipers I think.

I have 600EX non-aero brake levers and the hoods are the same for the left or right levers. I have a pair of the 600 Aero levers pre-Ultegra and iirc the hoods are left or right. Non-aero brake hoods don't fit the aero brake levers.

It'd be a real help to know exactly which model of 600 aero brake lever you have.

Here is one type that might work.

Shimano made many similar looking but completely different brake lever bodies in the mid 80's, which is where 6209 comes from.
The only other lever body that uses that hood is a DA 7401.
I know people who buy used 6209 lever sets just for the hoods for their DA levers.
Am not aware of anyone producing aftermarket hoods for those levers or anything that comes reasonably close.

Hi there OP.

I checked my 600 aero brake lever hoods outside and they do have a small L or R on the outside part of the hood that faces towards to opposite brake lever.

You might be able to find some NOS ones on Ebay or something else that's compatible with your brake levers.

Good luck.

Cheers
