I Need Tooth Ache Remedies

Dang painful tooth an upper rear molar. I need suggestions to relieve this pain before I can get to a dentist. Feels like I have an ice pick shoved into my right eye. I have taken ibuprofen and rinsed with warm salt water and I have some Anbesol. So I got a start but any suggestion are welcomed. Like grandma’s magic toothache potions or something. HELP

Seriously, it is probably an infection. Get some antibiotics from a quack. They won't do a root canal until they first treat the infection, so you might as well get a head start.

I just finished 10 day Bactrim regimen for an infection in my finger were the pins were. But yes I could go to the local quack to get some antibiotics.

Try to reduce inflammation? Brush and rinse well to make sure the general environment isn't causing any more inflammation. (Don't know if flossing advisable or not in this case.) If you have Mobic laying around, consider that. Try to reduce pressure on the nerve.

(I don't really know. You need a dentist, obviously. But I feel your pain.)

Oraljel may help. Keep ice on the tooth as well. An ice cube right on the tooth numbs the nerve.

+1...if you can, use antibiotics of the penicillin class for the infection, get to a dentist as soon as you can and more importantly take better care of your teeth!!

Some dentists and endodontists have a 24 hour emergency number. All they'll do is give you opiates, but it's not like that can make it worse. See if yours does.

Then sell them on the black market and buy a bike. That will help take your mind off of the tooth-ache.

Rinse with a strong mouthwash like Listerine or generic with eucalyptol, menthol and methyl salicylate to help with inflammation and pain. Then follow up with hydrogen peroxide. I get 'em at Dollartree for a buck each.

If there's a cavity, sometimes plugging it up with a temporary filling helps. Those often contain a topical analgesic to help ease the insertion.

Put a clove in your cheek near the aching tooth is a classic. But I've no experience with it myself.

Sounds just like an abscessed tooth. Had one years ago. Had to address the infection first, as others have said. Once the infection was taken care of.. a root canal.

Thanks all for the tips. 2020 I got dental insurance but as always they have to be in the network Rinsing with salt helped and it feels much better this morning. The molar is worn down and parts have fallen out. Age and wear I guess. Walmart trip to get all the stuff suggested. Then find a in network dentist.

1 teaspoon of salt per cup of water? all I received & wasn't prepared for pain after numbing wore off.salt water worked ok. just had a root canal redo by endodontists.reg. dentist only opened 1 1/2 roots of 3;wasted $1k+ so be sure to see an endodontists.all they do is root canals.also it could be a cracked tooth, prepare for the worst-extraction.good luck!

Going to make appointment on Monday. Not expecting good news and goodbye to my summer fun money. Health first I guess. I haven’t been to a dentist in 39 years so I’ve been lucky until now.

39 years?!
Did you have a bad experience? Or are you 39?

I once woke out of a dead sleep at 2am with one helluva toothache. I could visibly see that one of my small lower front teeth was pushing out/forward. In desperation, I drove to a local 24-hour grocery store and picked up some Anbesol. Didn't know any better. This was ~20 years ago. Yes, it was abscessed. But the Anbesol had the desired placebo effect. Somehow I got back to sleep for a couple hours, and saw the dentist first thing when he opened...root canal. He drilled a tiny hole which relieved the pressure...like flipping a switch. Ahhh!

How about a nice glass or three of bourbon?

Nope 52 so 1981 was my last visit. I have been lucky and chronically tooth brushed. Twice a day if not more. Just time on my teeth I guess. Some bourbon sounds good. The pain is mild today but it comes on goes. Saying go to the dentist.

By the way; I just had a conversation with my pharmacist about mixing Tylenol and Motrin ( or Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen) as a pain medicine. She seemed fairly stoked by the idea (I'm pretty sure she doesn't get to actually talk to a handsome guy like me very often so she was, well, excited) and explained that they work on different parts of the pain and the body metabolizes them differently. Thought that 325mg of the Tylenol and 400mg of the Motrin was a pretty good cocktail. WARNING for beer drinkers: The Tylenol can mess wit yo' liver.

This is not medical advice. It is interwebz BS and on Foo at that. Treat this advice accordingly.

My father used to soak a cotton ball in bourbon and keep it on the tooth.

You need to be more pro-active. It isn't just about your teeth. There is a very clearly defined link between dental infections and heart problems, for example.
