Thanks - there are some smart folks involved in this campaign who know how to get things done and work through the bureaucracy... this isn't an empty feel good petition.

I know this first hand I was hit on Mt Diablo with a car in my lane on a blind corner while I was descending.
Please take a few minutes to let the powers that be know we demand a safer mtn.

Chatted with Al at the Junction on July 25 and signed the petition. He does seem to understand how to work through the bureaucracy.

Hard to believe that some drivers are stupid enough to pass in the places they sometimes use to pass. Unfortunately, it is easier for me to count the number of times coming down the mountain when I haven't seen any stupid drivers passing in a dangerous place than to count the number of times when I have seen it. And usually, the times when I haven't seen any is when the mountain is socked in a cloud and there are fewer cars coming up.

I have had my close calls over the years and amazed at some of the driver's lack of concern to other's safety.

That's where I met him too! About 9am - he had just arrived.

MDSP did a traffic safety study that's in the public record. This is all the collision/accidents that were reported to the staff or were reported by the staff... doesn't include folks who crashed and rode home for instance; that's why it says "all the cyclists were injured". Part of making The Mountain safer includes cracking down on the reckless riders as well; the authorities are going to be looking for that.

Could this backfire? I have only ridden this once in 2013 on my USA climbathon (would love to have this climb in my backyard) and had read about zealous enforcement of the speedlimit, so sat on the brakes much of the descent to comply.

Second main bullet point - drivers and cyclists exceed safe speeds traveling downhill could be a driver to stricter enforcement again for cars and bikes? The speed limit unless changed is very slow!

I think slower descents are going to become mandatory... unfortunate but something we have to concede to be part of the contract we'll be making with other users. Cars don't really speed downhill on this Mountain, they can't.

Signed...I've always thought a conversation between the Kiosk Manager and Vehicle Driver warning about "no-passing zones around blind corners" should be mandatory. It's a simple concept, but it may save a few accidents...

Totally agree with this. Just like very time you go to a Tahoe area campground they give you the same speel every time about bear safety, just make it part of the deal. You drive in, the ranger tells you "don't pass on blind curves", and that's all that has to be said. What is the hurry anyway? GOTTA GET TO THE PARKING LOT AND START MY 3 HOUR HIKE NOW NOW NOW! Just calm down and use some common sense!

This is why I almost exclusively ride Diablo on weekday evenings. I've tried a couple of weekend rides lately and it's a zoo! Too many cars AND cyclists! There is nothing better than cruising up to the summit at like 7:30 in the evening with zero traffic on the roads while the mountain bathes in beautiful evening light. It's basically the perfect bike ride.

I noticed last night there is some kind of work going on along Summit Rd right before The Wall. There were even flagman signs out, so it looks like there are delays during work. Again, thanks to my after-hours ride, there was no impact to my ride, but I hope they aren't planning on tearing the road up or something...

Also, has anyone noticed that the first half mile or so of NG road is in absolutely horrendous shape now? I think because I ride it so much I haven't paid attention, but for some reason yesterday I really noticed how crappy the road is getting. Thankfully it's a relatively short stretch, and the majority of the road is in fine shape, but the bottom of NG is just awful!

Yeah, NGR's getting bad. The work near the Summit is on the Mary Bowerman trail - concrete walkway ADA accessible for wheelchairs. Not doing anything to the road, they just like storing their construction machines in that little parking space.

What's with the flagman signs then? When they pull trucks and equipment out into the road? Cyclists going for their Strava KOM's are not people you want to mess with by stopping them, lol!
