Need help finding short Presta valve tubes

I can't seem to find a source for short, threaded Presta inner tubes. 700x25.
The shortest I could find is 40mm with a non-threaded (smooth) valve which won't lock in place.
Not ideal but I would settle for a longer valve stem if it were threaded. At least I could lock it in place and it won't shift while riding and cause a flat.
Anyone know of an online source for these old style valves?

Thanks!!

joe

Vittoria seem to have slightly shorter threaded valves as an option.

For example, Excel carries a 700x25-28 with a 36mm threaded valve (link)

Add "32" or "33" to your ebay search terms that include "presta" and "tube" for results that include 32mm and 33mm stems. So you would search the following:

presta tube 32

Sorting by price you can choose the tube that suits you best. (Make sure the stem is threaded.) Search again, but substitute "33."

Schwalbe SV15 and SV16 are presta valve tubes with 40mm threaded stems. I bought some recently from this ebay seller. About $7 (less if you buy a bunch) with free shipping.

...there are a lot of online sellers for Continental 42mm stem Presta tubes. All the Conti 42 and 60 mm stems are threaded IME.
I used to buy them bulk packed from Chain Reaction, but they've been out of stock because of Corona virus production issues for a while now.

Agreed on these, just a bit longer, but not too much overboard. I actually like this length for getting them inserted, and for holding them up when starting from 0 psi.

Thanks for the heads up on the shortage, not surprised though. I'm still good for a while

Does it really matter? I have only ever tossed those little threaded nuts since I've seen plenty of people over tighten them and tear the tube and had plenty of complaints of the noise they make if they rattle loose. Although I have seen schraeder valves tear at the valve I can't really recall that happening with presta and even with schraeder that isn't what I'd call common. I like 42 since it does make it easier to get the pump on.

I’m interested in this because of the aesthetics. A too long stem just doesn’t look right. While long and short stems perform the same, I would rather buy as short a stem as I can and have about an inch or so sticking out of the rim. I do agree with Russ Roth on the nuts (caps too), completely unnecessary.

I agree. I buy 32mm stems on eBay. Sunlite brand I think. I have only had one fail in a few years and multiple bikes.

To me, yes. I think 32mm looks best in vintage rims ... and is the lightest.

FWIW, I bought a 5 pack of Schwalbe SV16 a couple years back, and every single one of them had a slow leak in the same spot. Looked like a small porous area, possibly caused by bubbles in the molding process.

I've also had problems with Michelin tubes.

Continentals have been issue free and reliable for me. 42mm stems don't look too bad. So I'll +1 the recommendation for those. I'm pretty sure the 32mm stem ship has sailed.

BITD I wouldn't have believed any one that came into a shop claiming to have defective tubes. It was always snakebite from installing with tire levers or similar gorilla moves. The Japanese tubes from the 80s were always good. Even the cheapest generic ones. These days, QC standards have slipped.

I hope you're wrong about modern day QC.

Wow, good tip. I guess it's these ones? https://www.benscycle.com/q-tubes-70...tu6884/product

A bit of a premium, but good to know they are still available.

I have only used Michelin tubes for 25+ years and they have smooth valve stems. In all that time I have never had a flat due to that valve stem shifting, so IMO it's a non-issue. As a plus, the smooth stem is a lot more gentle on the pump gasket.

...I, too, have noticed some QC issues with various brands of tubes, but it seems to be batch related. I buy the Conti's now because I, too, have not had an issue with them. Some batches of Specialized tubes I've encountered have had issues with leaking immediately at the point where the valve stem joins the tube. Also the ones Performance used to sell. Batch related because it would happen in several tubes bought at the same time, but not before or after.

I'm about to try some Vittoria tubes as an experiment, because I use their tyres a lot.
