Your Weekend Ride Reports -- April 18/19

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I tried to do Everesting on Zwift today, but did not complete it and bailed after 5 reps of Alpe du Zwift. Lack of sleep played a big part, I woke up at 1am and started riding at 2am. The intent was to complete no later than late afternoon, trying to beat the evening thunderstorms that my area has been experiencing these past couple of weeks. On audax rides sleepiness is not a problem, we stop and sleep whenever we need to, but for Everesting one of the rules is no sleep, so that was a problem.

Although I try to put most of the blame on sleep, but I think there are other signs that I had hit my limit, just that I was too focused on staying awake to notice. Right knee was starting to act up, toes and back were starting to hurt, and I could no longer hold power well - if I focused on my pacing I could maintain Z2 but the moment I changed position to the aerobars and just rode by feel I would quickly drop down to Z1. Anyway most of this was happening on the 4th rep so I thought cleaning myself up and taking a shower before the 5th rep would help. Other than feeling a bit fresh, I was still struggling up the 5th rep so I just pushed to complete that rep and then ended after that.

Wow nine hours on a trainer I enjoy stumbling across your audaux videos and posts

I did 53 miles on Saturday, mainly gravel. I got a new gravel bike with three bottle cages, plus I outfitted it with a 6L front bag, a framebag and a 15L rear bag bikepacking style. On the 53 mile route the front/rear pack stays home. Looking forward to century+ rides where I can't stop to resupply.

I rode home from work on Friday , a great 15 mile ride. Today I did my Sunday ride which was modified a few weeks ago to avoid the multi use paths. I went to the harbor in Ventura from my home in Santa Paula and then back to my shop in Ventura, 22 miles. A great week of cycling. Joe

47 miles Thursday, 39 miles Sunday. Beautiful weather, sunny and warm, but very gusty. I usually modify my route to suit the wind, especially to minimize the effects of crosswinds. But the tailwinds are fun.

48 easy miles on Saturday, solo as normal now.

Today (Sunday) I did a fantastic 70 mile gravel ride with a friend - south of the Twin Cities Metro, out of Northfield. This is the first time in all of this that I've tried this, and it was great. We met at the agreed upon place and stayed well separated. On the gravel roads we rode in parallel for some parts, but much further apart than we would have in normal times. And if we were not in parallel, then we were well separated - no drafting.

But it was great to be out on the gravel (something I wouldn't do alone - the isolation is too great in the event of a mechanical that I can't fix or some other mishap) and great to ride with a (well-distanced) friend.

We will do more of these.

Got in a short 13 mile loop around Hagg lake. Lots of elevation change so lots of fun. Still doing short bits while I get confident the new/used wheelset is good to go.
First ride last weekend everything felt exactly where it should be (had a bike fitting last fall) but yesterday things seemed out of sorts and not sure why. Will get out this week for another go and see how things feel.

30 miles Saturday and 40 on Sunday in FL, flat but windy. Getting back into shape slowly but surely. Summer is not far.

First ride since late October here in Wisconsin! 46 miles into that ever-present, never-goes-away stiff Wisconsin breeze.

Training up for a couple of centuries later in the year and riding solo per usual for me. The silver lining for all the world issues right now is getting 120 miles a week or so on my road bike.

Saturday Ride: 60.59 miles

Average Speed: 16.5 MPH
Average Cadence: 84 RPM
Average HR: 144 RPM

Next week I'll be up to 70.

If this whole pandemic goes on, pretty sure eventually we'll all get there (and maybe even be up for 1000km, or something else that's equally epic).

Tuesday I tooled around S. Tampa for 38 miles. The rest of the week and weekend were a bust due to weather and house projects.
