My front brake cable routes through my stem. Can I still swap stems? How?

I have cantilever brakes. I'd like to change my stem, but my front brake cable routes through it. What are my options for handling the brake cable? Can I only use stems with internal routing? Is there an adapter or bracket I can buy to stop the cable?

Thanks!

You need a front centerpull cable bracket for your headset. Not the best picture but you can see it just under the bars in front of the stem. While I'm not certain, I believe this will only work with a threaded headset. What is the diameter of your steering tube?

Scroll down in this link for various hardware solutions to this challenge. Best of luck.

Drill your stem?

Plenty of people do their own internal routing... if you really love a certain stem combo check the material of it make sure it can be safely modified. Many good bike shops can offer you a hand on that if you need!

You can also buy a fork-mounted cable stop. I have one of these on a Trek MultiTrack to stop fork judder, but it's absolutely appropriate for your situation as well. Here's what it looks like:

@pastorbobnlnh already posted a link that shows the fork mounted hanger. Ten years ago.
