Longest ride so far, today!
Did 5 miles. That would be my longest so far. I felt good on it. I did stop half way and take a break because it was slightly an uphill grade. Chain came off during a gear change and had to fix that. Made it back and thought I was gonna die. Lol. Glad I went that far, though. It was an accomplishment for me as my furthest so far had been like 2.2 miles.

Sweet! Like gbiker said, keep it up. May '10 my first ride of 6.5 miles almost killed me. My wife was seriously worried about how hard I was breathing when I got back. Fast forward to now, my morning rides are 21.3 miles, I did 146 miles total this week, and am attempting to complete a century this Saturday (tried one in the spring but only made it 76 miles).

@Allen55 congrats - how did your chain fall off? going from big ring to small ring in the front? Was the shift going hard uphill or under a "normal" load (say, flat riding)? The adjustments are pretty easy to make that may prevent that from happening in the future.

Your bike is new, take it back and have the shop adjust the limit screws.
Plus, good shift tecnique is very helpful. There is what is called "transition cogs". The cogs in the back best suited to aid smooth shifting up front. If you shift to the big ring, don't be on the far outside rear gear. shift up 2 or 3, then shift.
Same with the inside, shift the back toward the outside, then shift up front toward the inside to avoid losing the chain.

Great job Allen!
Learning to use your gears will just give you more weapons to use on those hills and flats. I am usually in the smallest gears always on the front and use the back ones all the time to allow me to spin or mash.

Im loving this whole thing...Im taking a rest day today, but will be back out and on the bike tomorrow. May try to ride around the house again and get some hill work in tomorrow. Im tired of being scared of an incline either with biking or running and am going to conquer those hills one way or another.

Great job
Don't get discouraged about hills or the wind and such. It takes time in the saddle to acclimate your cycling legs and cardiovascular system, but, it will happen.

Good job Allen55. Make it a regular ride. Fitness will come with regular riding. You are right to give yourself a day off but get back on again tomorrow and ride it again. Hills are a mind game. Accept the speed you can keep going uphill and that includes walking pushing the bike or stopping to rest. As your fitness improves uphill will also improve. When riding with others remember to ride to your limits not theirs. There is no shame if people are faster than you, or conversely slower than you. Good luck with your great bicycle adventure.
