I pulled one out of the BOC years ago, clueless. Not understanding what it was... I was informed, just in time to NOTthrow it away. I had intended to return it to the box. But I moved a few years ago, and it's come in handy on many occasions, the old bottle opener got left behind.
I don't want to blurt out the wrong name, but he who created it has my thanks! It's also a good conversation starter

That’s pretty cool. I wouldn’t do it with a perfectly fine Shimano 600 arm, but I do have a Stronglight 93 arm with a hairline crack that would be a good candidate.

Not to be a wet blanket, but is there anyone here who doesn’t already have at least one bike-related bottle opener? Apart from all the stuff like dropouts that can easily be used as bottle openers in a pinch, I have a Pedro’s Trixie multitool that has a bottle opener feature and a key chain bottle opener that came with my hitch-mounted bike rack. I probably have others too, because it seems like something that tool manufacturers think will make them seem cool. Frankly, it’s become a bit of a pet peeve for me.

Interestingly, I've been doing this for the last five decades, and I have yet to own a bike-related bottle opener. My problem is that I loathe having too many things with bike-related themes on them. To me, all of that stuff is simply extra weight. I can't stand too many tchotchkes and useless frivolous things laying about. I owned a Harley Davidson. EVERYBODY bought me HD stuff, most of which I wouldn't use or wear. Such a waste of money. Now I tell everyone that if they have to buy me something bicycle-related, then get me a gift card.

I made some openers out of spare coaster brake arms a few years ago.

Another thing I noticed is a wall mount bottle opener has the same hole spacing as a water bottle cage. It really only works on the bottom of the down-tube mounts like most touring bikes have.

Just wait until you have to stop drinking. Bottle opener, when the hell am I ever opening bottles. My favorite was the Surly 15mm one, love that big spoon side; but I've got to have a dozen.

Okay, I gotta fess up and admit that I have a collection of vintage bottle openers. Don’t think any are cycling related, but they’re kinda cool. Many of these were found by my late mother-in-law, who frequented junk/antique shops. in the pic are a small fraction of what I have:

Any flat surface and a proper understanding of leverage will open a bottle. Caribiners, coke cans, some rocks, some twigs, a frisbee, of course a lighter, the list goes on. I was stymied with a croquet ball, I don't think I'll get that one without damaging one or the other.

So lately I've seen bottle openers as part of the goody bag of races/events my wife and I have been in. My finisher medal was an opener for one last fall.

I created an excellent opener with a worn pick from an ice axe.

My garbage company won't pick up glass though, so I generally shop for cans these days.

A crank arm does seem kind of huge for the task. My favorite opener is this one. It surprisingly doesn't distort or dent the crown at all.
