Riding Resolutions 2020
#51
Cancer survivor (twice)
My goal is 2020 miles with a 66 mile ride on the birthday. Prostate cancer surgery will prevent me from riding until mid February. I bought a new bike so as soon as I can get back on the bike - you know I am gonna be excited! It will be a learning experience as things have moved around a little!

I don't really do resolutions, except still chasing my 5K miles a year goal. Never have made it yet.
I have been able to ride every day of 2020, so far, 8 days in a row. Rain maybe tomorrow, but let's see how long I can keep the wheels turning.

One ofmy co-workers lives in Pitman Center, just outside Gatlinburg. He has completed this ride a few times. I'll go with him, we are planning late summer. Usually start about 6:30 am, right at first light.

2020 Goals
1. Deal with the Stage 3 Lung Cancer diagnosis I got in Fall of '19. ALK+ NSCLC (Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase Positive Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer), so far so good with the one-a-day oral pill ($500 each!, not a typo, thankfully insurance covers it 100%). Getting off the blood thinners in 2 months (used to treat the multiple clots in both lungs) should help the energy level a lot, and reduce my risk of bleeding (both externally and internally) in case of a crash.
2. Fix the patellar tendonitis/tendinopathy that I ignorantly rode through for the past 2 years, but I seem to have found a good rehab protocol
3. Lose 1 lb. per week (for the next 26 weeks) by giving up alcohol and reducing the sugars/carbs (lbs. put on dealing with the stress of #1 , along with a major reduction in mileage caused by #2 )
4. Increase the ride length by 3-5 miles per week, and get back to doing centuries by summer (max. of ~40 miles @ 12 mph avg, at the moment)
5. Achieving 1 thru 4 and riding to the top of Mt Evans, again
6. Start bike commuting to work again (26 miles RT) once or twice per week
7. Keep my head down and chin up throughout it all

Ride to Denver. The northernmost part of Colorado Springs is 54 Miles from the southernmost part of Denver, so technically I've ridden that distance as my longest ride was 56 miles for my 56th birthday. The day before my 57th birthday my father passed away and I never got around to it. My goal is to ride my father's age this year (85 miles). That's about door to door from my home to my daughter's in Denver. I have a safe route picked out that I have recconoitered.
Anyway's that is my goal for 2020.

I lived in Monument for a year or two, and live in Highlands Ranch now. Route 105 (Palmer Lake to Sedalia) is possibly my favorite ride in these parts: rolling hills, tons of farms and open space, great views of the foothills, nothing industrial, well paved and decent shoulders on most of it.

Confession time. I jokingly said I would start out riding every day I can in 2020. I had a string of 17 days going. Well, its the 19th, and I've missed 2 days. Excuses: Long visit with out of town guests, one day, plus a longish drive. Another day, 40 mph winds. I ride for fun, and 40 mph is way off my fun scale. I still have almost 300 bike miles, so I guess a few missed days won't kill me.
