6 month streak broken

It was raining this morning, and the air quality was such that there was some air to breathe, so I got on the bike for the first time in a week.

As I pedaled away from the Palazzo, I thought back on when I was last on my bike, and when I last had an interruption in my riding schedule.

6 months. Six months and a week ago, my gym closed for the pandemic. In the Before Times, I’d ride about five days a week, and go to the gym the other days. Yeah, I ride to the gym, but it’s close enough that it’s not really a ride.

When the gym closed, I started riding every day, if for no other reason than to get out of the house. There certainly wasn’t anything to train for.

Without thinking about it, I rode every single day for six months. Until the fires started.

Looking back over the last 40 years that I have been riding, I have never had an unbroken stretch like that. Even when I was super serious, every month or two I’d miss days, either to travel, or because of injury, or family, As I got older, there were days school, work and family would be more important than the bike.

Now, I can’t travel, family is nearby, and I retired a few years back.so I had the time to ride every day. I just didn’t realize that I was doing it.

I doubt I will ever have a stretch like that again.

@Mr. Spadoni, In 2017 I had a streak of 236 continuous days of riding. That year became the highest mileage year for me, 6000 miles. This year, with so much time available, I will set a new personal high mileage for a year, I think 7300 to 7500, but will not come close to the continuous days number. That is probably around 16 days, certainly not even 20. I have had a lot more higher mileage days, say over 40, than I did in 2017. When I felt like I needed a day or two off the bike, I did that. Days when I had other things to attend to, I did not sweat it and try to squeeze in a ride in limited time. I have not had a single ride this year that I felt like I did not want to be doing it. I did have a few of those in the 2017 streak.
Riding and working on bikes has filled a lot of what would have been days that I would have been bored and trying to figure out what to do with myself. The days I took off this years were productive in the sense that I got needed rest, tended to other things, and did so with peace of mind regarding being off the bike. Considering the challenges and stress of this Covid 19 year, mine has been pretty good.

I have been putting a lot of miles, mostly onroad, on the mountain bike, often utility trips with the panniers. My usual beater, the UO-8, is still down for parts.

I just finished regearing the 1959 Capo, so I now have a 40-inch (38/25) low gear.
