WTB (buy/borrow City Bike - LA/SoCal Peeps

Hello All,

Little bit of an unusual request. I'd like to hook my son up with a reliable city/beater bike. He is a sophomore at UCLA. They have moved to online only classes. Many, if not most of the students have gone back home. The gyms are closed . He chose to stay in LA ( I think correctly) to be near the resources of the school and avoid a transcontinental flight (through LAX no less). Anyway, I think he could use a bike as it would give him some more independence and let him get out of the neighborhood some. This is of course, if no lockdown occurs. I've perused LA CL, but I'm not real confident in my son's ability to spot a decent enough bike and fix one that needs work.

He's 6'5" , so needs a bigger frame. He's pretty fit, so small gears are not a must have. Watcha got?

Well, I guess never mind for now. Looks like California is on lockdown. Maybe I’ll bump when all this is over.

I’m not quite sure for a road bike. His 29er mtb here at home is a 20” with a 75 cm BB to saddle top measure. My guess for a road would be around a 60-62 cm. Last time he rode a road bike was when he was 11 😀 .

Spaghetti Legs just to note lockdown (at least in San Jose area and am pretty sure the all california is modeled after the bay area shelter in place) allows people to go out for critical needs like going to grocery store, pharmacy, gas station, hardware store. Also outside exercise is ok if it is solo....i.e in San Jose police broke up a pick up basketball game because man to man defense meant being with in the 6 foot separation distance.

Still a lot of fine tuning.....pet foods stores are considered essential, but pet grooming is not. open question on bike stores. Auto dealers can fix cars but have to shut down sales floors. barbership, beauty salons, nail places non-essential (will result in caveman/hippie vibe and lots of gray hair reveal)

Yes, it is shelter in place and not really a lockdown which means you can go outside for exercise, which is considered a human essential. So going on a bike ride is perfectly fine- air is probably a lot cleaner with less cars as well! any outside activity that is not in groups and not contact oriented is good. I plan to go hit the archery range for instance: outside, using your own equipment, everyone stays at least 6 ft apart by design of the sport.

California Shelter In Place Order NO CYCLING!

Spaghetti Legs If your son was in the SF Bay Area, I could probably help but it's a moot point now.

The 6 SF Bay Area counties used the San Francisco Shelter In Place Order as a boiler plate for their own Health Department orders. It was later adopted by the State of California:

City and County of
San Francisco
Department of Public Health
Order of the Health Officer

ORDER OF THE HEALTH OFFICER No. C19-07
comply with any of the provisions of this Order constitutes an imminent threat and creates an immediate menace to public health.
2. All individuals currently living within the City and County of San Francisco (the "County”) are ordered to shelter at their place of residence.

5. All travel, including, but not limited to, travel on foot, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, automobile, or public transit, except Essential Travel and Essential Activities as defined below in Section 10, is prohibited.

I was out riding in Alameda this afternoon along with a lot of other cyclists. There were a lot of folks walking and running too. The police didn't say anything but all of the facilities along the shoreline park were locked or shut down including the restrooms.

Depends - how’s that for an answer?

I had a couple hundred bucks in mind as a ball park.
