We have been walking and cycling a lot in the last couple weeks.

Just in the last couple days ... we walked about 5 km yesterday, and today we walked about 6 km and then cycled about 21.5 km ... all exploring.

That was in Victoria.

And then we parked the car and wandered (walking) about Campbell River + a 51.4 km ride.

When we got to Nanaimo, we and friends of ours walked to the restaurant for dinner. No point driving when you've got a good restaurant just round the corner.

Today, Rowan and I walked back from the car rental place after dropping off the car.

We have used a car on our travels to cover the longer distances, but prefer to park it and walk or cycle if we can.

Oh also ... that 21.5 km ride in Victoria was the first ride I've ever done in a skirt! I had cycling shorts on underneath, but our plan was to ride from the hotel along the waterfront and out and about to explore a bit ... and then we would go to dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory, and for that I wanted to be in something other than cycling shorts, so I did the ride in a skirt. For the most part it went all right, but we'd change directions and a gust of wind would catch it and blow it about, and I'd have to spend a minute or so getting it all settled again.

Old Spaghetti Factories must be more formal where you live.

I walked down town to NAPA to pick up a new deck belt for our lawn tractor.

Edit: I was thinking about Machka and Rowen Monday after I finished running at Minto Brown park in Salem. I was stretching and cooling down when a couple rolled in on a pair of Bike Fridays. I didn't have time to talk with them as I had a meeting to get to. Those look like cool bikes.

Old Spaghetti Factory is a Canadian chain, and while it isn't formal, you probably wouldn't want to turn up in cycling attire.

And ... they are kind of cool bikes.

Yesterday, I did my typical ride to work and back, using the bus where I can. In the afternoon though, after climbing up to the bus stop, I was joined by about 15 kids and two chaperones from the local Montessori school. They all gathered at the bus stop. When the bus came, I was happy to be able to take my time loading my bike instead of rushing because the bus is waiting on me, and then I got in the end of the line to board the bus.

I wondered where they were going, I could have asked the leader, who was sitting in front of me, but I decided to let it reveal itself to me. It turned out that the library was their destination. I thought that was real cool, kids learning to use the bus and use the library in one field trip. There's hope.

Today the bus was absolutely empty except for the driver and I. I imagined that I had an enormous stretch limo.

Today I rode up Cedar Hill Rd. without stopping. I've been working on that several days a week for 6 months. I cheated and weaved back and forth taking the full lane in some places, but I did it.

Rode my bike to the dedication of a new memorial to veterans from the area. It is located right along the route I ride everyday to the local hospital for swimming exercise. In fact the hospital donated the land for the memorial.

Walked ~4.5 miles r/t to the QT for some sweet tea.

I've decided to give up carbonated colas and I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I still need my caffeine fix .

On June 30th, halfway through the year, I hit 503. 65 km. Not bad for the first half of the year ... hopefully I can do that or more in the second half.

And now, just 6 days into July, I'm at 528.45 km. It helped that we did a big hike to the top of a mountain and back on July 1.

Photos of the mountain climb are here, starting with the "01Jul15_MtCheamClimb_01" photo ...

104 miles Saturday. Just exploring the rural roads nearby. No mater how much I ride there seems to be something new to see on every ride. Last Saturday saw an Aqua-car. A few hot rods yesterday.

Saturday -- 42.22 km with 773 metres of climbing, including one climb rated as a Category 4.

Cold!! By the time we got up into the hills, it was only about 7 or 8 degrees. Thank goodness I brought an extra fleece vest for the descent.

But it was good ride. I felt pretty good almost all the way up, but then started to run out of energy. We stopped at a little bakery, but my chocolate macaroon finger just didn't do it for me. It didn't give me the energy I hoped for. So the descending was all right, but the climbing right at the end was a bit of a struggle. I'm also experiencing a mystery back pain for some unknown reason.

Nevertheless, apparently we were faster this time than last, and we took a break this time!

The scenery on this route is beautiful ... forests, hills, and Mt Wellington topped with snow.

Not the best photos ... we didn't stop long enough to take photos because it was too cold ...
