During the last few weeks I just acquired these two bikes. I posted photos of them in separate threads. I now have a dilemma and looking for thoughts from others.

The pink Trek 770 measures 23 inches from crank to top tube and has been thoughtfully upgraded with Campy components to be a triple. After riding it the gearing seems perfect for the local terrain and my fitness level. The frame is a bit small so the seat post is a bit short and I’d need to change out the stem to adjust the fit.

The teal Trek 670 measures 25 inches from crank to top tube and is completely original including the Condor seat and Modolo brake hoods. This frame fits me perfectly but for me the gearing is not suitable for much more than flat terrain. I would hardly ever ride it as is.

i know the 770 has a higher quality frame but the components have been changed so it’s lost some of its bling although I’m guessing it is still pretty desirable. The 670 on the other hand is not quite so desirable with a lower quality frame. I’m thinking that swapping components on these two bikes would make the 670 a really sweet ride.

So...do I swap out components or change the fit on the pink Trek and ride it? I’m trying to not be collector so maybe selling the pink Trek after the parts swap could be an option. BTW I was a roadie in the 70s and rode a frame very similar in size to the Trek 670. I bought the 670 with the idea of improving its gearing and riding it. It would be like the old days. More recently the pink Trek showed up and confused the situation.

I'd venture a guess that 531cs would make a better 64cm frame than 531c. (see https://kuromori.home.blog/reynolds-531/#80s for tubeset comparison) 531c can be a little whippy in larger sizes. The fork on 531cs would be a bit stiffer and less compliant.

Pretty simple to put a new freewheel on the 670, and sell the 770 as is. Or, part out the 770, putting all the good bits on the 670, which is what I would do, and just sell the 770 as a frame, and let someone else build it up. The bike that fits is the bike to keep. Easy choice for me, I prefer teal to pink.
