Bells are not for vehicle drivers. For that you want a Hornit.
Most cost effective and the best sound is the Crane brass bell. Al bells are soooo disappointing along with small diameter bells.

I like them communicative, in the sense that I can give a friendly 'I'm here, in case you didn't notice'-signal, and a clear 'watch out xxxxxxx!'-signal. A while ago I stumbled upon a really cheap one, it was huge, heavy and out of tune or something. It really had a moody nasty ring to it, I liked that too.

I would suggest you listen to one in person before deciding, if you haven't already. I was at a bike shop that had one mounted on their counter for people to try. Even indoors I was not impressed with the tone or decible level. YMMV.

I just have a cheap Chinese bell purchased from Amazon on my bike. I ordered one style but received another, at first I was disappointed because it looked like a standard "jing jing" type bell, which I didn't want that sound since it sounds too much like a child's bike for my taste. However, the bell actually gives a nice, loud "ding ding" on pulling and releasing the trigger. Quite loud for its size and good enough to alert the morning walkers I come up behind. Only issue is that they didn't have one in black which would have matched my handlebars and the black/white color scheme of my bike, but the silver one looks OK.

faster downhill
I have an Oi bell, and while it's not incredibly loud I don't recall any pedestrian or fellow cyclist who have not heard and reacted to it. It must be the tone/pitch that makes it audible while not too loud. It is also not gaudy and blends in with my bars.
For earbud wearers, automobiles, and idiots I carry a police whistle which is awesome at getting attention.

Difficult to mount on the handlebar, but incredibly loud, appealing sound.

A SpurCycle is $45USD last I knew. The only time you'll hear anyone not love it is if they bought a knock-off (which are legion). If your LBS is an authorized dealer that is your best bet as the frauds are everywhere and completely fail at imitating the real thing (which is funny...considering we're about a bell of all things--something that mechanically has been well understood for hundreds of years).
I get "THANKS!" from people when ringing on the MUT....where "ON YOUR LEFT" would get oaths and swearing and leaping to the left if it was even heard. I've only ever met one pedestrian (older guy) who told me he would rather have "ON YOUR LEFT" shouted at him.

Where I live, they’re up to $50 for silver and $60 for black.

But the bell I like best is the ching-a-ling Bell bell from Walmart at $5.99. It's like carrying a puppy. People love hearing it when I use it on the bike paths, Must remind them of their youth when they rode trik es with the same bell.

I just put an Oi on, I like it, it blends in well and not really noticeable.
If they made it a little wider it could hold my bar tape in place...

I ignored the poor feedback on Amazon saying that after a couple of rides the "pinger sticks" .. and mine did ... used it for 3 / 4 rides and sent it back when it completely failed to work.

No! No! No! First, a bike bell should sound like a bell bell. And second, it needs to be within thumbs reach. If its doesn't qualify under those two basic fundamentals then its of use to me.
This one I have fits those two criteria and doesn't cost a lot. Although if you care to spend more feel free to do so.

I used to be in the Crane camp having several of their hand painted bells and still loving them but after hearing a Spurcycle and then going out and buying a couple I am sold. Spurcycle all day every day. If you have seen Spinal Tap and the guitar room scene that bell is just like the Gibson with the crazy sustain. If you haven't seen Spinal Tap get the hell off of Bike Forums and go watch that movie right away or there is also self immolation.
Light, small, loud and it looks good, what more could you want?! Also it is made from I think all metal and it uses an hex bolt rather than a silly screw attached to plastic that in many cases don't fit a standard 31.8 bar.
