1990 Miyata 414

I'm eyeing a 1990 Miyata 414 on Chicago Craigslist for $150.

I don't know if it's allowed to link to someone else's CL ad, and I can't attach photos yet, but it's the only 414 in the area if anyone wants to search. Here's the writing from the ad in bold...

For sale: 1990 Miyata 414, 52cm, 18 speed road bike - Very Good condition. Original wheels, shimano 105 gearset and shifters, original handlebars and stem, Sakae Blaze crankset, SPD pedals, and a new seatpost with a used saddle. This is a super fun bike with some surface wear (minor scuffs/scratches etc.) but no dents and no accidents, rides very smooth!

From photos I think the large chainring is worn (blurry) ,there are scratches on the frame, the tires are worn, needs new bartape and brake hoods. The seller told me he thought it wouldn't need much besides the bartape, hoods, and maybe eventually regreasing the wheels.

Any opinions?

I love Miyata's STB tubeset but I'm blasé about SunTour Blaze. Cosmetic condition appears average for a ridden but not abused bicycle of this era. The big concern is the use of a Shimano SIS rear derailleur with SunTour Accushift levers and an unknown freewheel. There have been mixed reports about the compatibility, so shifting may not be to your satisfaction in index mode and a test ride is mandatory. Also, the comment about eventually greasing the wheels is interesting. It sounds like he never overhauled the bicycle, which is going to be required for something 28 years old. If you're not capable of doing your own overhaul I'd pass. If you do your own work and there's nothing required beyond the mentioned consumables, it's an OK deal.

When what I can see is obviously neglected, I assume what I can't see will be more neglected. Wheel hubs, bottom bracket, headset; all will need rebuild, some will need replacement. It would need to be cheap and you will need to be able to do the work yourself. Otherwise, you will be way upside down on it by the time it is road worthy.

Well I see the price in the ad, I'd keep looking.

On Blaze, as much as I love Suntour components from that era, Blaze is a real doggy group.

$150 would be an excellent deal in my area. That was one of the final models Miyata ever sold under the Miyata name, I believe.

Thanks for taking the time to help! You talked me down .
I don't have the skill or tools to repair anything beyond a flat or a turn of a screw. I do plan to learn, but I have an old crippled hybrid that's a better candidate.
I just got wrapped up in the STB tubing in a frame that fits me.

It's hard to sort through all the flippers, children's bikes, and old Schwinns on Chicago Craigslist. Anything well under $300 stands out. I appreciate having some experienced eyes on it so thanks again. I'm loving bikeforums so far.

Find a bike co-op. They come in all shapes and sizes. A good one will either sell you a refurbished bike, or let you pick up a project and provide some guidance (and tools!) for you to fix at their shop.

Its scary to think how much I have spent on just tools........ Access to quality tools via a bike co-op can save you a lot of $$. Some co-ops charge a small membership fee which is worth it.
