2002 Trek 2200 $450 right price?
Hi Guys,
Looking to buy a new bike and get into road biking (have had an entry level road bike for commuting). I'm a grad student so can't afford anything too fancy, based in SF. Found a 2002 Trek 2200 on CL was wondering what a good price woudl be for it. Listed at $450. I rode it yesterday seems to be in pretty good condition, some slight rusting around the brakes but only slight. The guy selling it is a bike mechanic and he has tuned it up and changed the tires. Description below. I can't post links as I'm a new member.
56cm Trek 2200 "Alpha SL SuperLight" road bike. Good Condition! Features Ultegra components and OCLV Carbon Fork. The frame was Handbuilt in the USA. It was tuned recently. Also, the wheels were recently upgraded to Mavic CXP22 wheels, and the tires are in good condition. Includes bottle cage and clipless pedals. Regular flat pedals avail if needed. 56cm size, best suited for someone 5'9" to 5'11".
Thanks a bunch.

Its all about the shifters, they are 16 years old, which is close to end of life. Some people temporarily revive them with WD40 or similar, I am not a fan of that, and in my experience, that revival is temporary at best. If the shifters smell like WD40, thats what the seller probably did.
If you are not hung up on Ultegra, you can get a variety brand new nine speed shifters at a reasonable price.

It doesn't look like it's been used much so age isn't that big a factor. I bought a barely used 2200 off the bay in 2004 for about $700. I guess it's worth at least $350 but probably more as I'm always amazed at what used bikes sell for.

Aren't brifters always scratched on top.
Bike looks really nice, but I would look for old steel.

It's a nice bike in OK condition looks clean and serviced but has some wear hard riding note sharking on big chain ring some wear on wheels and likely slight flat spot on rear wheel not big issues, riding if everything else is good not likely noticeable but indicators of moderate to heavy wear so as noted the shifters are likely at the end of there life. Considering this you really need to check it out in person and ride it if anything seems even a bit off on the shifters or wheels pass.

I bet you can make an offer on that 560. If I was looking and willing to spend the money you are willing to spend the 560 is what I would shoot for. (I have an 89' 660)
Seems like everybody is either tall, or short. Not many 56's in your price range. I gave up looking.
