Tektro brake lever bar clamp spread wider than stock diameter

I bought a pair of used brake levers. The original bar clamp diameter is 22.2mm I believe but the one I bought seems to have been widened by the owner to about a 25-26mm clamp diameter. Are these still safe to use if I pinch the bar clamp area back to a smaller diameter?

safe? that's pretty subjective.

i might just buy some new ones, but if i did try it, i would inspect it closely after installation for any cracking. it's a shame the previous owner didn't know the difference between road and mtb handlebar clamping diameters...

nice looking levers, BTW.

If they are really 25-26 mm diameter, the previous owner mounted them adjacent to the stem like CX supplementary levers. It's more than the difference between MTB and road bar lever clamp diameters.

You could use a shim to take up the slack. Even something like cardboard or plastic sheet would work in this application, since the lever only needs to be clamped tightly enough not to move under normal use; it is actually an advantage if it can rotate around the bar in a spill, this could help avoid damage or injury.

I would not recommend trying to bend it back since you will likely not be able to have it come back to the right shape and it may crack in the process. If the shim does not work you have lost little, if the lever cracks you are done.
