I have a 1992 Trek 950 I need to rebuild. I partially rebuilt it once when I first picked it up to make it rideable (overhauled the hubs and replaced the BB which forced me to replace the crank). I then ended up riding the bike in winter which is tough on a bike. So it's time to take it completely apart and rebuilt it. I never liked the v brakes and those shimano trigger shifters are only so so. I plan on rebuilding with cantilevers and thumb shifters. I'll likely go with a butterfly bar since I want to use this bike for touring on tough surfaces. It's next on the build queue.

Someone who should be tarred and feathered used a plastic washer behind the crank bolts of the Rossin I picked up yesterday. The nds bolt had deformed the washer, preventing a 14mm socket from securing around the bolt head. Arrg! I finally succumbed to a tiny drill bit to remove enough plastic from around the bolt to remove it. I'm almost there ... I hope ...

The drive side washer wasn't deformed enough to prevent a socket from removing the bolt:
I guess I should consider myself lucky these weren't 15mm bolts.

It works! This Force derailleur needed a 31.8 to 34.9 adaptor but then wouldn't swing out far enough, not enough to lift the chain to the big ring so some trimming of the internal spring was needed. I don't think it will affect strength or reliability in any way. I'll be using non indexed thumb shifters. Still waiting on a new chain too.

I have a couple/three bikes with headsets that are "indexed". The worst of them - until last night - was the one in my Colnago Mexico; this headset has been in the frame since 1994 and I don't believe it's been serviced since then, either. When I got it all apart (with the intention of retiring it and installing an almost-NOS one in its place) I was floored to see absolutely no evidence of wear on any of the races. I was expecting divots for sure, but was pleasantly amazed.
I also used the last of the blonde shellac to give the black bar tape a couple coats to extend the color-fastness. In between coats I cleaned the headset parts and re-installed them with fresh Phil Wood grease. I also made a somewhat sad replacement at the front end with an eye to allowing me to use this bike more often.
Because I was shellacking the bars I removed the brake levers. I wanted to give them a quick polish with aluminum polish, but I had also decided that for now, I would have to remove and store the custom leather hoods produced by our own @rootboy. I've noted that my hands have had a tougher time this summer gripping the lever hoods on this bike because the leather hoods are that much more thicker than the gum ones and they don't provide that vital bit of squishiness my aging paws are requiring more and more.
I decided to finally use a pair of Campy-copy hoods made by Robbie Fellows a long, long, long time ago. I got these after some back/forth between us bitd regarding drillium and such. He was going for an amber translucent look and this was a test shot he gave me. Looks brown from a distance, but up close it's translucent dark orange. Pretty cool, but more importantly squishy and smaller. I finished putting everything back together this morning and took it out for test ride and I can now go no-hands ridiculously slow without fear of losing my balance and there's no play or shudder when braking which means I got the headset final adjustment bang-on.
I wonder if I can get another 25 years of use out of this headset? Gonna give it a go

I like the way you seem to clean everything...I normally do a quick wipe and assemble.
I may take the queue and clean and polish this next build.
I have been collecting stuff for a while and will create a new thread asking which one I should start and finish ove the winter...I like the floor like everyone else!

I was very close but was denied a cigar, my short cage derailleur couldn't handle the 12- 32t big cog on the cassette I ordered, which I would have known if I had done the research on Velo Base before I ordered the new cassette, I have a 12-28t 7 speed cassette on order which should arrive Sunday and solve the issue.

Damn it. I stripped out the extractor threads from the drive side crank on my McLean. I don't mind ruining it, as the operation was to replace the cranks, but this is going to be difficult. I'll look for one of those three-arm gear pullers.
While I had the bike apart, I cleaned it a bit. It is not enjoying life in a barn. I have to take it apart and de-rust and grease every damned nut and bolt. The front brake caliper had one arm seize to the center bolt. I overhauled the whole caliper and brought it back to life. It's an old Campagnolo Record single pivot caliper. Well made indeed. I brushed the pieces with a brass wire brush and added grease. I love having a bench vise.
