Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In other news, I got a weird urge to restore my first road bike, a 1994 Cannondale R500. I bought this in late 1995, as I recall, and put a lot of miles on it before I bought the Ritchey in mid-1997. It's the 3.0 frame with the 'cantilevered' seatstays, and one of the early threadless headsets. It came with RX100 7 speed triple groupset, with downtube shifters. Along the way, I ditched the 170mm RX100 crank for a 175mm Campy 'Racing T', and added Sachs New Success brifters and rear derailleur. I no longer have the original rear wheel with its 7speed hub, and I was running an 8 speed 105 wheelset for most of its existence. BUT I still have the original front wheel.

I decided I wanted it with downtube shifters. I thought about just rebuilding it with the original triple crank and 7 speeds, but RX100 was available by that time with 8 speeds, and I really don't want a triple anymore. So I dug into it and ended up going a little wild on Ebay last night, buying old RX100 parts. I bought a 175mm 53x39 crankset and BB, front and rear derailleurs - the 8 speed ones are different from 7 speed - and a NOS rear 8 speed shifter. I still have the original brake levers and right and left shifters, but if you're doing indexed - and why wouldn't you? - the 7 speed won't work well with 8 speeds (so I have read).

Am I crazy? Yes.
Crazy? I don't think so. I bought a 3.0 cantilever frame with their first aluminum fork many years ago and built it up. Compared to my first (1.0 ?) Cannondale, pretty comfortable ride. For an early Cannondale at least.

Chain Reaction Cycles seems to be salty with me. The other day, I had three 28mm tires in my shopping cart @ $55ea, but didn't check out. Now they're $150ea, while the 25s are still $55.

Flat. Pitifully flat. Old and weak. That’s what the weights are for, theoretically.

I'm hoping to attend a poorly attended midweek day game before leaving PHX. Once you get in the gates it's pretty easy to socially distance if the G.A. grass section hasn't sold many tickets. Showing up ridiculously early could mitigate the gate situation somewhat, but I might have to pay for one extra $10 hotdog to get through the game.

I’m about the same. If ride under 2.5-3 hours, just water. If 3-4 hours, mix in bottles +/- fig bar. Of course more calories for a century.

It is possible we're both crazy.

I do remember noticing how much nicer the ride on the Ritchey was, plus the Cannondale had a tendency to 'hop' when cornering on rough pavement, so when I started descending on the Ritchey, it was a revelation.

Near the end of my 70’ or so on the trainer, today, I was beginning to see black spots. That’s the first time that’s happened. I did have a light breakfast today, a small slice of coffee cake at 6am, and started riding at 11. It was a decently hilly ride on FulGaz but I didn’t push it all but during my normal cool down lap of a park, things started getting pretty wonky with my vision and brain wobbling.

I only mention it because of the prior posts about eating and riding. I may have to start “carrying” gels on my trainer rides.

Never seen black spots but recently in the last month on a longer ride in the cold I remember feeling really really sleepy near the end of my ride. Which was weird.

Funny thing about my Cannondale is that it's got what I think is probably the first generation of threadless headset, Dia Compe's Aheadset. The 1994 catalog shows the R500 with a threaded headset. In fact, it shows a threaded headset for the R500 from 1993-1995. So mine is a little bit special. It's funny, though - 1" steerer.

Somewhere in the mists of time I lost the original stem, which was too short, and the original Modolo bar, which was too narrow. I mean, who specs a 40cm bar on a 58 cm bike? I still have the 3T 'Forge Ahead' stem I got to replace the original. So, I just bought a 3T Forma on Ebay.

I'm going to stick with the 105 wheelset I already have, with any eye to later picking up an RX100 rear hub and using it and the front hub I still have to build a new wheelset. I'd LOVE to find an 8 speed RX100 rear with Mavic 195 rim, but that's a lost cause. AND I've never built a wheel before....

Not mine but pretty darn close. When I started racing, 'big" tires were 23mm. Felt every bump and ripple.

Yeah. And I used to run at least 120 psi. With Vredestein Fortezzas, I'd run 130, but miraculously they were still pretty compliant at that pressure.

I weighed 220. Ran 140 usually.

Did a fun ride with 7 others, only 40 miles but with a 9 mile climb and some smaller climbs. When we got to the top of the last climb the wife of one of the riders was there with a truck loaded with snacks, water, and Gatorade. Turns out it is his birthday and he didn't know she was going to be there. She had enough stuff for at least 25 people, including 3 cheesecakes.
We sang Happy Birthday even though he asked us not to, and I had a lovely slice of cheesecake with strawberries and blueberries on top. Very unexpected.
