I couldn't find my dream frameset, so I ended up buying a fully built-up bike and used the frame for my dream build. Now, I have almost enough leftover parts to build a full bike.

I tried selling the entire groupset as a package deal. I get it--Ultegra 6800 doesn't command the price it once did. The Stages crank arm was worth $250 alone but multiple people sent offers for $200 for the whole set

Should I wait until "cycling season" starts in earnest and hope more serious buyers are out there, or should I buy a frameset of the same era (because this groupset does not belong on a 2021 frame), build it up, and sell it as a bike instead of as parts?

List the components separately on eBay. Not worth your time / money to buy frame and build it for an unknown amount.

A complete bike is usually an easier sell, but you can typically make more money parting it out; it just takes longer.
​​​​​​You have to find buyers who are looking for the parts you have, and people who shop used components are generally looking for deals.

I've sold bikes with backdated components before, I'm just very clear about it to buyers, and try to price it fairly. I wouldn't buy a 'period' frame just to hang a take-off groupset on, if I've already got one on hand.
Since I usually use the proceeds to fund other bike projects, I'd rather have a lump of cash to work with now, than a pile of parts, and a trickle of income, and complete bikes are an easier sell. .

I’d probably sit on it and keeping working the sale— CL, FB marketplace, eBay— and expect it to sell in the spring.

I don’t know where you priced it or what you are willing to take, but I’d be happy to pocket $450 - $500 and be done with it. Box it up, ready-to-ship, and wait for it to sell online.

Building a frame is an option, and I agree a complete bike is easier to sell (esp. locally), but the frameset probably won’t add it’s cost. I mean, buying a $400 frameset doesn’t make it a $900 bike. If you can get a $100 frameset, okay, maybe you have a $600 bike, but even with a power meter, it’s my guess you won’t pull much beyond $700 unless you score a big name frame for really cheap. But do you want to sink more time looking for that? And then do you go through the hassle and cost of shipping a whole bike?

Either way, I would part it out separately, rather than keeping it as a group.

As far as building it into a new bike.... buying what you need just to build up a bike to sell.... sounds like a lot of extra work that in the end will net you less money.

I've gotta think selling off individual parts would have better results than trying to sell a complete groupset. There are loads of bikes out there with Ultegra 6800 in need of replacement parts, and people like to match stuff. The only reason to buy a full Ultegra 6800 groupset is because it's cheaper than R8000.

The Stages PM crank arm will likely sell on its own, as supply on these is a bit tight at the moment and lots of people are looking for cheap options to get on Zwift.

List it all individually on ebay if the group isnt getting interest.
Another option- buy a $10 membership here and list the components on the for sale forum.
If you are pricing everything too high, itll sit. ebay gives a pretty easy to measure current value- if it sells it was well priced or underpriced. If it sits, its over priced.

I am in the market for some 11sp Shimano, but have no interest in paying $350 for some shifters, so I will wait since its not pressing. I am guessing thats a pretty common position right now, due to how high prices are overall and how seemingly low even 2nd market inventory is.
