Crank failure ebay item

looks as though there was an initiator where the dark triangle is - from a chain-drop nick?
Dammit, now I have to go look at *all* the crankarms (again)...

My only crankarm failure was an Arabesque 600 driveside, perhaps an inch below that one. It was a void in the casting. Which means it likely wasn't visible.

I broke a Campy Record once when I was lot younger, and later on a couple of carbon fiber cranks, but none were my personal bikes so I can't say what they had gone through before hand.
Most of the cranks I've seen broken over the years have been broken either closer to the taper or at the small end nearer to the pedal.
I've owned and ran dozens of Shimano Arabesque cranks, I can't say I've ever seen one of those broken.
I did have a Gitane for a while though with that same Nervar crankset on it, but it was too small for me and I sold it years ago.

I once broke a left side cottered steel crank across the cotter eye and ended up riding home with the cranks at about 150-210 degrees instead of 180-180.
For me the most painful (literally) failure was snapping a 1970 Sugino Mighty Compe crank cross the pedal eye. I ended up sprawled on the ground, legs spread apart, but with both shoes still in the toeclips. I noticed that the next generation Mighty Compes had a bit more metal around the pedal eye, making me suspect I was not the only victim.

The black area was where it initiated and propagated. Silver failed in rupture. Probably took a decent amount of time to fail, but I'm impressed that rupture happened with so much material uncracked.

Glad I'm not the only one who saw that. I actually planned to go downstairs today and check to see if any of my Nervar cranks were setup with triples, I don't think I have any 6-bolt cranks though.
