I have committed N-1!
I sold my 2013 Stumpumper FSR 29 Comp mountain bike, barely a year after buying it, because I just wasn't riding it enough since I became so infatuated with dirt road riding. It was a great bike and I'm sure I'll miss it. I have a 2006 Rockhopper frame in the shed that I'm going to piece together into a bike so I am not totally without a MTB. No doubt I'll get another MTB before too very long, but it won't be my next new bike. Bye, Herschel!

There is method to my madness.
1 - The Stumpjumper, while a great bike for the kinds of trails we have here, was capable of too much more than I am comfortable doing anymore. I found myself too often riding with fast and aggressive MTB guys and getting myself into some scary situation at high speeds. I like riding technical trails, but I can live without doing it so fast. Going back to the 26" hardtail Rockhopper will still let me ride offroad and will help me figure out just where along the spectrum between that and a 5" travel full suspension 29er I would most like my next MTB to fall.
2 - My wife wanted a new car and needed help with a down payment. Selling this bike put enough cash in my hand to give her what she needed. She is now happily driving her Rougue and I'm the great guy who sacrificed one of his beloved bikes to help her out.
3 - I want to build a new AWOL adventure touring bike and make some component swaps and upgrades with the Roubaix, the Casseroll and the Monster Cross. That will be much easier to justify now.

I'm sitting at N=1 if you don't count the tandem. I was going to buy a mountain bike when I retired, but now that I'm retired I don't have the time to ride N+1. When I do find the time I'm probably going CX-like. I have no desire to ride single-track, but I'd like to explore some of our great parks at more than horse-walking speed.

Well, I did a n-1 a few months after I had done a n+1 so it kinda evened out. Got rid of the too-small Trek 1100, and had picked up a correct size Univega.
My next move will be to either sell or part out the much-too-tall $75 Nishiki that I had basically bought for parts anyway.
Still waiting for the right deal on a true vintage touring bike... Saw an ad for a nice, nearly mint 57cm Miyata 6-series in SoCal but they wouldn't ship. I think I'll wait for a local deal on a similar size mid '80s Fuji Touring IV, Miyata 1000 or similar Univega. I've got the time to wait...

I'm headed toward the ridiculous. Rather than N+1 I'm thinking about adding a power meter which is something no senior citizen really needs. I've got a specious rationale, however, so all is good. The bad news is that Vector is the only thing that will work on my Volagi. Good news is I'll wait for the SPD-compatible version. I've changed to much on my bike that I probably should take credit for an N+1.

A person can get along just fine with only a 26" hardtail Rockhopper, which happens to be my ride of choice. We don't need to be doing that hardcore technical stuff at high speeds at our age, either. I prefer the rolling stuff at my own pace.
