Brauer team dinner @ a midtown Manhattan eatery was a big success, sorry gsteinb missed it, but he's in a warmer place, and he needs that more. Great bunch of guys, including the sponsors, who really are down to earth and good company to hang out with. A good time was had by all, even by those of us who viewed it as a Day of Team Holy Obligation.

Strong team this year, good chemistry on the team.

if I were somewhere warm I wouldn't be sorry to miss anything around these parts, especially an event that helps me get fat. More snow on the way is what I heard today, second hand information too because I've tuned out weather reports because at this point more snow doesn't even matter to me. I've resigned myself to riding the trainer and shoveling out parking spots until April.

I met my team mate Matt @ the bike shop in Piermont. We rode into Manhattan in my car together. The way I looked at it, this is the only way I can ride with him without getting dropped.

Matt is a 49 year old who resumed racing after a 10+ year layoff a couple of years ago. He went from Cat 5 to Cat 2 in three years or less. How many 49 year olds do you know who have just upgraded to Cat 2? Man we have some strong guys on that team. It's scary. Ask the other teams, they know.

I'll get a road ride in tomorrow. Tuesday is out, wintry mix. Probably ditto for Wednesday. Then Thursday it's supposed to be like 15ºF during the day, so it will all freeze solid on everything. I may be off the bike for three days again this week.

The amazing thing is that I managed over 800 miles in January, even with a whole bunch of off-days; at least 150 miles ahead of 2010. 120 road miles since Friday.

I think I want to try to commute in to work tomorrow. It's supposed to be in the 20's. Totally doable. I'll charge my light up now. I should be able to bring my bike home on the train tomorrow night if conditions are bad. I'm planning to study at work till later anyhow.

I'd love to ride outside but commuting by bike is just too risky especially riding home at night because once I cross the GWB riding in the dark in rush hour traffic is dangerous enough, adding other hazards like black ice and narrow roads just isn't worth it for me.

My mom's 73d birthday today. She said she didn't want anything fancy, just dinner at the house with the family. The kids played Wii bowling with her while my dad and I made dinner. Low-key but really nice. Really nice.

12"-18" up here in Happy Valley. No commuting for me for a bit, mainly for what Jorge has mentioned, and I don't want to do the structured workout stuff during the commute on icy roads in the dark.

Still not sure what I'm going to do about racing this year.
It wasn't just a curve ball that life threw me. It was more like a curve grenade. Picking up pieces still.

"Oh look. There's some. And there's some. And there's a piece over there."

Train and race. When I do those things I'm thinking about nothing else. I bet you could use some of these little "mental vacations", if only for a couple of hours.

Last nite my 2 little princesses were playing the Wii, after the younger beat the older in sword fighting, the 7yo replied, "Good for you, you big P-word!" I had to go upstairs to hide my laughter, I composed myself and asked her where she learned that word, she said she didn't know. I suspect she overheard it Saturday while attending a relative's b-day party where several 8-10 year old boys were in attendance.

I've been known to say damn, ***** and jesus christ around the house, but I never use the p word. My wife wasn't as amused as I was.

I love training right now. That may be strange. I love the discipline it takes to get up early, get on the trainer, and hurt yourself. I love the hard group rides too.
It's just, right now, when I think about getting lined up for a race I'm uneasy. I only think about the negative things that happened last year.

Maybe (and it's not really a bother) this year should be taken slowly. Maybe I should race when and if I feel like it. I'll just keep training and doing fun rides to relax my mind and 'get away' if you will.

The Spring Training Series is coming up at the end of next month. I loved those races. Last year I did all 6 races and looked forward to it. This year I don't.

Not a bad camera by any stretch, but not what's generally going to be the go to body for the pro photog who shoots Canons.
Yeah, live view photography is annoying, although I do use it sometimes to set focus for portraits with the 10x zoom -- but I shoot TTL. If the 60d is like my 550D, then the shutter button won't do anything because it's already open. I must not be talented enough to shoot that way, because I also have no idea how to take a picture in that mode (it's one of the buttons on the back next to the screen). It's kind of a silly arrangement, acting like the shutter button is mechanically connected to the shutter -- when the camera is really like a PS2 controller, and any button could be assigned that job.

Priceless: Canon 60d is some kind of badass. Certainly a good camera, and it has about 5 bullet points that mine doesn't, but takes the exact same pictures as the 550d and the (much better) 7d. I kind of feel like the 60d is too middle of the road. I'd probably just stretch a little further to a 7d.

Reminds me of a story I read about mountain rescue first responders and how they suffer from ptsd.

My insomnia is back. I thought I had it under control for a while there. I've been late to work a lot lately because of it. Luckily it's not the kind of work where anyone really minds too much.

Went to bed at 9:15 last night, finally fell asleep around 10:45, woke up at least three times that I can remember, probably more. When my alarm went off I just thought, "you've got to be kidding". Turned it off for a couple hours.

I'm thinking of trying to get on some sort of sleep aid. Right now all I take is melatonin. I did a sleep study once, but of course I slept like a rock straight through and they learned nothing. That had to be the first full night's sleep I've had in years, and of course it happens during the sleep study. I joked that I should just hook myself up to a bunch of wires and hire a nurse to watch me sleep every night.
