There were cops out, but no one tailing us. We saw one cop van parked on the west side entrance ~80th street, and he was there for like 40+ minutes. Other than that, people were running red lights left & right, and i didn't see anyone getting pulled over. But who knows how this will play out in the next few week as the park gets populated again.
lemme guess. People's Republic of China and something with a space program? Still have no idea...

Sigh. I would have though that of all places to recognize a degree isn't demarcation of anything other than persistence, Stanford would be it. Sadly my bloc isn't always quite as sharp as the students we serve...
Thinking about going to get a degree in something interesting, physical therapy/nutrition/counseling/..., but have issues committing to even 2 years of classes and time commitment.

I hadn't completed my 4 year degree when I was hired into my current job. The two requirements for the job were "A four year degree and knowledge of unix systems administration". Although they were able to find plenty of candidates that met #1, none of them met requirement #2 and my department had to run the job search three times before they could get an associate-provost to give them approval to interview me. They could not interview me without that approval.
I've since finished the degree.
If you're working at Stanford you probably can get free tuition and time off work to go to class. Just get the piece of paper, it might seem stupid, but it's sometimes necessary just to open the door for the interview.

Oh and in a rare twist to the cops ticketing cyclists who run red lights, I was on the greenway this morning by 34th street and stopped at a red light because I had just passed two mounted police officers. Just as I heard them approaching one of the officers says "go ahead bro" so I replied "you're not going to entrap me are you?" he laughed and told me to go through the light. I sprinted up to 54th just in case they were going to try something sneaky.

Why would you think that? Stanford's in the business of churning out people with degrees.

And yeah, I will, eventually. I will go get 2 more years of schooling in something entirely unrelated to the work I currently do so that I can be interviewed for a job that is very different than what I'm doing, but peripherally related.
Time is the only thing any of has that's of real value. I hate the idea of wasting it, so I'm hoping something catches my interest. I'll get $$ to pay for classes, but it will be on my own time after work/weekends.

University isn't a waste of time, nor is it just an effort in persistence, you actually learn things there too.

Laid down in my office trying to nap. Getting sleeping and actually feeling myself falling asleep....
the cleaning crew comes in and starts to vacuum.
FFFFFffuuuuuuu!!
They rarely do that. But there she was in the office behind mine slamming into the door that separates the offices.

I like how the focus of the media is rescuing a few miners who didn't die in a collapse rather than putting a giant 60 Minutes style boot up the asses of the people in charge of keeping the things from collapsing in the first place. Like 90+% of these things are preventable and it's not as if mining is some new technology that we're sorting the bugs out of.

Precisely. People who make the degrees should know their value. Sure, they sell them for $51k/year so they want to keep up appearances. I get it, but a little internal honesty would be great.
And yeah, I will, eventually. I will go get 2 more years of schooling in something entirely unrelated to the work I currently do so that I can be interviewed for a job that is very different than what I'm doing, but peripherally related.

-Suck up your pride and do what you need to do to get where you want to get.
-Keep complaining about the system and never be in a system to change it.
From the standpoint of racing/training, PT and nursing are awesome.
You get to work 3-4 long ass shifts, but that's that. And then you have enough flexibility to pick up more shifts if you need to. That's in a hospital.
If you're working in an outpatient setting or in a private practice, you do the 9-5 thing.

I pulled my cubicle out from the wall a bit at one job and made a spot for myself. My boss got mad, not because I was napping, but because it's easy to get caught napping like that, and my boss would get in trouble. He recommended walking down the street to a nice park and taking a nap there. That was my MO for the whole summer whenever I got tired.

My office is great for napping. Fully closed off and quiet when the cleaning crew doesn't show up.

When I give in and go back, it will be to study things I'm interested in for fun, not anything related to my work (which is closer to hotel management/administration). But the degree opens opportunity, for some reason. Seems a little irrelevant.
Actually, the reason the degree opens the interview slot is because the director wants to be able to say that XX% of employees in his group have a 4-year degree. So yeah, literally getting a degree just to have a degree. Not quite the spirit of the institution, imo.

Thanks, but I know what I'll need to eventually do. I was commiserating with Psimet, not seeking advice. I'm a normal guy; I can be made to do things for reasons I don't agree with, I'm just not convinced they are "necessary" under any applicable definition of the word. When I go back I'll make the best of it and study something interesting to me, personally. I just need to figure out what that is and get a little bit more frustrated in my current position to motivate it.

And this is silly because with undergrad degrees as commonplace as they are, you have to go to grad school to get anywhere.
All this means is that people are paying off debt for much longer than they need to, and of course, that the universities are are rolling in the dough.

Just scared my coworker.
There's an engineer out on a job site waaay far away and he called asking for him.
I told him the engineer wants him to come down to the job site, he needed help.
His jaw dropped and there was an audible thud. "You're kidding me."
"He's on the phone now."

I hear where you guys are coming from, but I wouldn't go so far as to write degrees off as useless pieces of paper given out for the sole purpose of making money.
