Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

List of the Bicycles You Have Ridden

Can you remember all the bicycles you have ridden from the time you got on a bicycle as a kid? Just for fun, reach back into your memory and see if you can come up with the list.

Bicycles I have ridden
  • Red tricycle
  • Gold convertible girl/boy bicycle (single speed)
  • Red step-through "girl's" bicycle with basket (single speed)
  • Red "boy's" bicycle (single speed) - this was a 1950s bicycle handed down to me by my father
  • White ten speed - built up by my father
  • Silver ten speed - built up by my father
  • Blue ten speed - my mother's bicycle, but I rode it sometimes. My parents had a matching set of blue ten speeds, but when they got the tandems they often rode those and I rode my mother's blue ten speed
  • Gitane tandem - green, late 1970s
  • Gitane tandem - blue, early 1980s
  • Venture ten speed - gold, mid-1980s - I still have this bicycle and rode it thousands of kilometres between the mid-1980s and late 1990s. Rowan converted it to a fixie in 2006 and he has ridden it a little bit
  • Maruishi ten speed - blue, late 1980s - this was my father's bicycle for years, but when my Venture started to show signs of wear, he gave me the Maruishi to use and I rode it for a few years. Rowan borrowed the Maruishi when visiting me in 2008, and rode it on our wedding century
  • Cannondale - red, very small. Too small, and I sold the Cannondale to a shorter friend who loved it
  • Giant OCR3 - 2000 model - good little bicycle but it only had a double chainring and I wanted a triple. I traded it in for another Giant OCR3
  • Giant OCR3 - 2002 model - good little bicycle with a triple chainring. I still have this one
  • Mongoose Mountain bike - Walmart version - this bicycle was surprisingly comfortable and durable. I commuted year round with it for about 5 years
  • Raleigh - borrowed from a friend in England on a 10-day visit there
  • Recumbent 1 - can't remember the brand. A friend let me ride his recumbents. I have pictures so someone could probably tell me the brand
  • Recumbent 2 - also can't remember the brand. See above
  • Catrike - my father's recumbent trike
  • Greenspeed tandem trike - a friend has one and we gave it a test ride
  • Marinoni Ciclo - Machak. After 7 years and tens of thousands of kilometres of cycling all over the world. Machak was stolen 2 Easters ago
  • GT Mountain bike - as a mountain bike and as a "frankenbike". Rowan converted into a road bicycle immediately after Machak was stolen so I could ride a 300K the next weekend. I still have this bicycle and it is awaiting a reconversion back to a mountain bike
  • Red Postie Bike - Rowan picked up one of these from the tip and we've ridden it up and down the street
  • Hasa Titanium - current long distance bicycle
  • KHS Tandem - borrowed for several months
  • Santana Arriva Tandem - current long and short distance bicycle
  • Shogun - built up as a touring bicycle, but will be converted to a fixie
  • Thorn Club Tour - brand new touring bicycle
I think that's all of them, although I'll probably sudden remember more while we're off riding this afternoon.

Haha, yup that was a long time ago, when I was around 5. We loaded 5 people onto it and went down a hill(without brakes) straight into a huge pile of gravel.

Well, why not list the bikes you've owned and ridden. With someone of your experience, it would be interesting to see the evolution of your riding preferences.
