Road or MTB in Las Cruces, NM?

Planning to spend about a month in Las Cruces, NM and we have the option to bring either our road bikes or our mountain bikes. My partner is a beginner mountain biker and would very much prefer road biking. I am concerned that the area may not have enough quiet/safe roads for this purpose, but I could be wrong. On the other hand, I have seen a few interesting trails on YouTube that might not be so intimidating for a beginner.

So for those familiar with riding around Las Cruces, if you have a choice, would you take road or mountain bikes to ride around?
