Google Earth to plan rides?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Google Earth to plan rides?

Does anyone use Google Earth to plan their rides? Or am I the only geek here?

I love it, you can measure your planned route distance and everything (Tools|Measure|Path).

Get it here!

Love it! I have found so many little roads around the area of my house, that I have never been on before. I find it really helps to find routes of different lengths etc.

I use it all of the time, it is truly a great help. Plus for all of you Detroiters look at the old Tiger stadium on Google Earth and you can see how down-hill it went.

Yeah, I never realize there were that many streets/roads in the area. Plus I can plan for the scenic routes too. Like today before my ride, I Googled it and found a nice 5mi strect along a lake that was very nice. Never realized there was a road there before.

I went by it last Saturday on the way downtown and it looks like it has been swallowed up by the surrounding slum of a neighborhood. Sad really.

Don't forget the altitude information, certainly a plus when planning routes that I've never rode before.

you can download the file here: https://www.nycbikemaps.com/googleearth.html

Man, that's horrible. Never lived in Detroit but was fortunate enough to hit a couple Tigers games. I thought they were going to try to put condos or something in there?

It is a wonderful tool! But I must caution you : Old dirt country roads do not appear differenly than normal ones with Google Earth. They all look the same on the map 'till you get there.

I just downloaded it, but all I'm getting is a white map with very faint gray lines for roads. What am I doing wrong?

Can you see any detail (like houses, trees, lakes) when you zoom in a allow it to stream 100%? Granted the satelite picture is a bit washed out but I can make out a lot of detail. Where do you live? Your location may be in the low-res area.

I live in small town, but I tried some urban areas as well and didn't fare much better. The best I did was in Detroit. I got a few gray blocks here and there... nothing recognizable though. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have dial-up?

Use it all the time, a great tool. The mileages are amazingly accurate. I make my own cue sheets using the info and it's right on.

Try using gmap-pedometer. It still may take a bit of time but it should be a lot faster than Google Earth.

How do you get elevation plots from Google Earth?
Do you need the +Plus option?
Is it a graph like GMAP's?
Please post screenshots.

Thanks

I usually use gmap pedometer for that kinda stuff... simple (important for me) and no download required. I hadn't considered using the google earth thing. didn't know you could map out routes like that. I'll give it a try, thanks for the link.

Yeah, you need the Plus or Pro Earth to save routes.
