Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

105 Upgrade

Somehow I have figured a way to bend my 105 re-deraleur and needs to be replaced eventaully, it still works but sometimes has a hard time shifting. My question is would it be worth it to put upgrade to 105 10 speed or just keep 105 9 speed that came stock on my '06 Reno? I would really like to replace all Tiagra on my bike with 105, but I think that would cost more than it is worth, am I correct in this assumption? Thanks for the help guys/gals.

I would look to go to Ultegra instead of 105. You can find good deals on the 10 speed Ultegra components.

Your rear derailleur isn't what determines if you're 9 or 10 speed. To go from 9 to 10 speed you need to swap your chain, rear cog and shifter. Either way you'll need to be replacing the derailleur you bent.

Buying new 10 speed stuff will be quite expensive, unless you can score great deals on eBay. It might be cheaper overall to fix up your bike, sell it, and buy a replacement!

I would just change out the derailleur. You can pick one up cheap on E-Bay. The cost of going from 9 to 10 speed would be expensive. Do you really need the extra gear?

I'm not trying to bust your chops Mike. I have a Dura-Ace 10 speed and I have a Tiagra 9 speed. The Dura-Ace is nicer and shifts cleaner but is it thousands of dollars better? Absolutely not. They both work well. BTW, your Reno is a sweet bike. I think I have a soft spot for Lemonds...

You could always upgrade your bike to 9-speed 105, I did this and it cost me about $220 total. I really hunted around for the good deals though. Honestly, I can't really tell a big difference in the shifting, but I like the way it looks. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the original Tiagra stuff.

For what it's worth, I've felt a very noticable difference between Tiagra and 105, and virtually no difference between 105 and Ultegra.

To go from 9 to 10 speed = $ (Chain, rear cog, shifter, & derailleur)
I would just replace the bent 105 with another 9 speed 105 and save the money for your next bike/new gear.
