Google Earth to plan rides?
Does anyone use Google Earth to plan their rides? Or am I the only geek here?
I love it, you can measure your planned route distance and everything (Tools|Measure|Path).
Get it here!

Love it! I have found so many little roads around the area of my house, that I have never been on before. I find it really helps to find routes of different lengths etc.

I use it all of the time, it is truly a great help. Plus for all of you Detroiters look at the old Tiger stadium on Google Earth and you can see how down-hill it went.

Don't forget the altitude information, certainly a plus when planning routes that I've never rode before.

It is a wonderful tool! But I must caution you : Old dirt country roads do not appear differenly than normal ones with Google Earth. They all look the same on the map 'till you get there.

I just downloaded it, but all I'm getting is a white map with very faint gray lines for roads. What am I doing wrong?

I live in small town, but I tried some urban areas as well and didn't fare much better. The best I did was in Detroit. I got a few gray blocks here and there... nothing recognizable though. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have dial-up?

Use it all the time, a great tool. The mileages are amazingly accurate. I make my own cue sheets using the info and it's right on.

Try using gmap-pedometer. It still may take a bit of time but it should be a lot faster than Google Earth.

How do you get elevation plots from Google Earth?
Do you need the +Plus option?
Is it a graph like GMAP's?
Please post screenshots.
Thanks

I usually use gmap pedometer for that kinda stuff... simple (important for me) and no download required. I hadn't considered using the google earth thing. didn't know you could map out routes like that. I'll give it a try, thanks for the link.
